Stone Edition Chumash Commentary p. 568:

 “The first two chapters of Tzav discuss offerings that have already been mentioned in the previous chapters: olah (elevation offering), minchah (meal offering), shelamim (peace offering), chatas (sin-offering), and asham (guilt offering).  Previously, however, the Torah addressed itself primarily to the people who bring those offerings; now, the Torah speaks to Aaron and his sons (v2) and teaches them the additional laws that relate to their sacrificial service.” (Ramban)

Torah Nugget:  “A Holy Priesthood”

Leviticus 8:1-36

 Lev 8:1  The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying,

Lev 8:2  "Take Aharon and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams, and the basket of matzah;

Lev 8:3  and assemble all the congregation at the door of the Tent of Meeting."

Lev 8:4  Moshe did as the LORD commanded him; and the congregation was assembled at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

In order to enter into Holy Service the  Kohanin had to be

In Messiah we have been anointed, purified, consecrated and Sanctified

2Co 1:21  Now he who establishes us with you in Messiah, and anointed us, is God;

1Pe 1:22  Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

Heb 10:10  by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Yeshua the Messiah once for all.

Heb 10:20  By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Lev 8:5  Moshe said to the congregation, "This is the thing which the LORD has commanded to be done."

Lev 8:6  Moshe brought Aharon and his sons, and washed them with water.

Stone Edition Chumash

      “ Brought..forward.  Moses brought the Kohanim to the laver, where he would wash them in preperation for their induction into the priesthood (ibn Exra). The requirement here was for immersion in a mikvah (Rashi Exodus 29:4). Immersion requires that a person be submerged completely in the water, without even a hair protruding.  This symbolizes the idea that one should “submerge” himself in God’s holiness, to the exclusion of extraneous and contradictory influences (Michtav Me’Eliyahu).  This was a necessary and fitting prerequisite to the concecration of the Kohanim to the Temple service.”

What are we to do as new believers in Messiah Yeshua..

Act 2:38  Kefa said to them, "Repent, and be immersed, every one of you, in the name of Yeshua the Messiah for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Gal 3:27  For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.

This first immersion we go through as new believers is the first step to be set apart as holy vessels for His service.

1Pe 2:5  You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Yeshua the Messiah.

1Co 6:19  Or don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own,

The Clothes of the Priesthood..

Lev 8:7  He put the coat on him, tied the sash on him, clothed him with the robe, put the efod on him, and he tied the skillfully woven band of the efod on him, and fastened it to him with it.

Lev 8:8  He placed the breastplate on him; and in the breastplate he put the Urim and the Tummim.

Lev 8:9  He set the turban on his head; and on the turban, in front, he set the golden plate, the holy crown; as the LORD commanded Moshe.

The Clothes of the New Covenant Priesthood of Messiah: (notice the similarity to the garments that were put on the High Priest)

Eph 6:11  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12  For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Eph 6:13  Therefore, put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14  Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Eph 6:15  and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of shalom;

Eph 6:16  above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.

Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the spoken word of God;

Eph 6:18  with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the holy ones:

What is the armour of God?  It is the clothing of the Priesthood who stood in the gap and interceded for the nation of Israel.

Lev 8:10  Moshe took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and sanctified them.

Lev 8:11  He sprinkled it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its vessels, and the basin and its base, to sanctify them.

Lev 8:12  He poured some of the anointing oil on Aharon's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

      Stone Edition Chumash p. 583

To Sanctify Him..

There are two kinds of anointment, A king is anointed to invest him with a spirit of power-but a Kohen Gadol is anointed to elevate him to a station of holiness (Haamek Davar)

Yeshua was anointed as a King and as Kohen Gadol…

Act 10:38  even Yeshua of Natzeret, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Heb 7:22  By so much, Yeshua has become the collateral of a better covenant.

Heb 7:23  Many, indeed, have been made Kohanim, because they are hindered from continuing by death.

Heb 7:24  But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable.

Heb 7:25  Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

Heb 7:26  For such a Kohen Gadol was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Heb 7:27  who doesn't need, like those Kohenim Gedolim, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

Heb 7:28  For the Torah appoints men as Kohenim Gedolim who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the Torah appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.

We have been anointed In Him

2Co 1:20  For however many are the promises of God, in him is the "Yes." Therefore also through him is the "Amein," to the glory of God through us.

2Co 1:21  Now he who establishes us with you in Messiah, and anointed us, is God;

2Co 1:22  who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

The Blood was applied:

Lev 8:13  Moshe brought Aharon's sons, and clothed them with coats, and tied sashes on them, and put headbands on them; as the LORD commanded Moshe.

Lev 8:14  He brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aharon and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.

Lev 8:15  He killed it; and Moshe took the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar, and sanctified it, to make atonement for it.

Lev 8:16  He took all the fat that was on the innards, and the cover of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat; and Moshe burned it on the altar.

Lev 8:17  But the bull, and its skin, and its flesh, and its dung, he burned with fire outside the camp; as the LORD commanded Moshe.

Lev 8:18  He presented the ram of the burnt offering: and Aharon and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.

Lev 8:19  He killed it; and Moshe sprinkled the blood on the altar round about.

Lev 8:20  He cut the ram into its pieces; and Moshe burned the head, and the pieces, and the fat.

Lev 8:21  He washed the innards and the legs with water; and Moshe burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a sweet savor. It was an offering made by fire to the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moshe.

Lev 8:22  He presented the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aharon and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.

Lev 8:23  He killed it; and Moshe took some of its blood, and put it on the tip of Aharon's right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the great toe of his right foot.

Lev 8:24  He brought Aharon's sons; and Moshe put some of the blood on the tip of their right ear, and on the thumb of their right hand, and on the great toe of their right foot; and Moshe sprinkled the blood on the altar round about.

The Blood applied to the right ear, The thumb of the right hand and the great tod of his right foot.

Stone Edition Chumash p. 585

Although  this ritual is a Scriptural Decree, it has a homiletic lesson that applies to everyone.  The blood upon the ear symbolizes that the Kohanim should always listen to and obey God’s commands. The hand is the organ that grasps things and that is active; so the blood upon the thumb symbolizes that the Kohanim should actively carry out His will.  And the foot is the organ of movement; so the blood on the big toe symbolizes that the Kohanim should always move with alacrity to serve God (R’Avraham ben HaRambam)

We have been called to a Holy Priesthood:

1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

7 Days of Consecration of the Priests

Lev 8:33  You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting seven days, until the days of your consecration are fulfilled: for he shall consecrate you seven days.

Lev 8:34  What has been done this day, so the LORD has commanded to do, to make atonement for you.

Lev 8:35  At the door of the Tent of Meeting you shall stay day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that you don't die: for so I am commanded."

Lev 8:36  Aharon and his sons did all the things which the LORD commanded by Moshe.

Walk Leviticus Commentary- Jeffrey Enoch Feinberg PH.D.

“ The call to holiness is commanded for all who would minister for the  nation as priests. Not just Aharon, but his sons also are sequestered during the time of ordination. Ask yourself honestly: when is the last time you set aside the week solely for the purposes of purifying yourself and seeking the face of the Lord?

Remember that you have unlimited access to God in heaven, right now! When Yeshua came, the entrance into God’s dwelling in heaven was opened up for us.  In the Spirit, we have been granted an access to God previously experienced by only the Kohen Gadol of the nation and by him only once each year.  Do you take this privilege with anywhere near the holiness that God expressly commands?

Never forget that God in holy! And never forget that His Ruach haKodesh dwells within your earthly tabernacle. Give of your whole self in service.  You will please Him with your offering-a sweet smelling savor like the olah (ascent offering) and priestly mincha (tribute) that ascend to heaven itself”

 1Co 6:19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1Co 6:20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Food For Thought:  Are we living Kodesh/Holy, sanctified/set apart lives as His Holy Priesthood?

Haftarah Nugget:

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Jer 9:23  Thus says the LORD, Don't let the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, don't let the rich man glory in his riches;

Jer 9:24  but let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, says the LORD.
