Quote Of The Day:

Daniel Juster – “Jewish Roots”

“It is no accident or mistake that the synagogue has given special recognition to the Torah, the first five books of Moses.  Some wrongly believe that the synagogue greatly depreciates the rest of the Bible.  This is not the case, rather the early Jewish community properly sensed the foundational nature of the Torah.”

Deborah’s Drash Commentary:

In Your Midnight Hour He Will put a song in your heart

Gleanings From Psalm 119

Vs.61 Though the cords of the wicked have enclosed and ensnared me; I have not forgotten your law.

Vs.62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You because of Your righteous ordinances.

When persecution and distress arise, so should the Word arise out of our lips.  When Paul and Silas were thrown into the deepest darkest dungeon they knew the secret of freedom, the Word was upon their lips, they did not forget His Word but gave thanks at their midnight hour.   What were these Messianic Jewish believers praying?  What songs were these Messianic Jewish believers singing?  The prayers and songs from His Word, the Tenack/Old Testament and His Torah, what else!

Acts  16: 23-26

After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in prison, charging the jailer to guard them securely. 24 Upon receiving such an order, he threw them into the inner cell and clamped their feet securely between heavy blocks of wood.

25 Around midnight, Sha’ul and Sila were praying and singing hymns to God, while the other prisoners listened attentively. 26 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake which shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose.

He will put a song in your heart in the Midnight Hour

10 Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

  Isaiah 42:10 (KJV)

1 Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

2 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.

  Psalms 81:1-2 (KJV)

3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

  Psalms 40:3 (KJV)

His Word strengthens us and gives us courage.  We need to take courage from His word.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

  Josh 1:9 (KJV)

10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

  Neh 8:10 (KJV)

The Word is our light in the darkness

11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

  Romans 13:11-14 (KJV)

This is where the sacrifice of praise comes in, when we do not feel like praising Him, that is when we need to praise Him the most.   It is very easy in the days we live in to become depressed by the wickedness that is going on around us.  That is when we need to remember His Word, for it is His word that gives us hope, that gives us strength that has the power to blow off the chains of the wicked that would try to keep us in bondage.

19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

  Isaiah 59:19 (KJV)

A Minister I heard teach was sharing how she was learning Hebrew from  a Rabbi who gave her a wonderful insight into this verse. The Rabbi said that the comma is placed wrongly in the King James Version that it should read this way.

When the enemy shall come, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up standard against him.

When I read the verse this way I picture Pharaoh’s army coming after Israel as they were crossing the Red Sea, and just when it seemed like the enemy was going to overtake them, the Lord caused to Red Sea to close up and like a flood covered the pursuing army and the enemy was defeated.

Remember His Torah/Word is the standard that we need to use against the enemy to defeat Him in the power of the Ruach Ha Kodesh.

When the enemy shall come, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up standard against him.

Isaia 59:19b

[1] An excellent Torah Devotional is the Walk Series, Walk Genesis, Walk Exodus, Walk Leviticus, Walk Number, Walk Deuteronomy , by Jeffery Enoch Feinberg, PHD by Lederer Books, a division of Messianic Jewish Publishers.   Easy to read, with Hebrew nuggets, and illustrations. Also FFOZ Torah Club is a more detailed study, and worth enrolling for.

[2]The Jewish New Testament, (Clarksville, MD: Jewish New Testament Publications) 1996.

[i] The Psalmist found great value in the Torah of God.  Here in Psalm 119 he breaks the Torah down into eight different categories

-Law (Torah) – Connotes the whole will of God as imparted to man for his teaching

-Testimonies (edot)- Revelation (Torah) as a witness of God and His righteousness

-Precepts (pikudim)- Particular guidelines for the Redeemed

-Way (derech) – The path of life delineated for the Redeemed in the Torah

-Commandments (mitzvot)-There is  a great reward for walking in them

-Statutes (hukim)—Permanent laws regulating the life of an individual as a member of society

-Ordinances (mishpatim, beter translated “judgments”) The judicial standard for fair dealings

-Word (debar or imrah) – General term for the expressed will of God
