Kenneth E. Hagin “Classic Sermons” “Where sickness comes from”

“As long as you think sickness is a blessing from Heaven, you’ll entertain it, receive it, clasp it to your bosom and own it.  You need to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that sickness and disease do not come from God.”

Overview of Portion

This is the Torah portion containing the giving of the Ten Commandments. Did you know that there are differences in the Ten Commandments as stated here (Exodus 20:1-14) and related later in Deuteronomy 5:6-18? (Suggestion: have your children find the differences as a game at the Shabbat table during dinner).

Moses' father-in-law, Jethro (Yitro or Yisro in the Hebrew) joins the Israelites in the desert, advises Moses on the best way to serve and judge the people -- by appointing a system of judges -- and then returns home to Midian. The Ten Commandments are given, the first two were heard directly from God by every Israelite and then the people begged Moses to be their intermediary for the remaining eight because the experience was too intense.

The portion concludes with the Almighty telling Moses to instruct the Israelites not to make any images of God. They were then commanded to make an earthen altar; and eventually to make a stone altar, but without the use of a sword or metal tool.

Rabbi Kalman Packouz

Exodus 19:1-6

1 In the third month from the Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt, on this day, they arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 They journeyed from Rephidim and arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai and encamped in the Wilderness; and Israel encamped there, opposite the mountain. 3 Moses ascended to God, and YAHWEH called to him from the mountain, saying, "So shall you say to the House of Jacob and relate to the Children of Israel. 4 'You have seen what I did to Egypt, and that I have borne you on the wings of eagles and brought you to Me. 5 And now, if you hearken well to Me and observe My covenant, you shall be to Me the most beloved treasure of all peoples, for Mine is the entire world. 6 You shall be to Me a kingdom of ministers and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the Children of Israel."

There are several things taking place here and we need to take a close look at several of them. First and foremost is what YAHWEH is saying in verse 5. He tells Moses to tell the Children of Israel that if they listen to YAHWEH's voice and follow His covenant they will be the most beloved and treasure of all the peoples of the earth. Amazing is it not that God chooses Israel to be His most prized possession out of all the peoples of the earth. But there a condition to that promise. Israel must listen to God's voice and in listening to that voice they must follow what the voice of God is telling them to do. What is God's voice telling them to do? To follow the Torah!

In doing that Israel will be a kingdom of priests and in doing that they will become a holy nation. Does this promise sound familiar? Of course it does because it is repeated in the 2nd Testament. But why did it need to be repeated if God gave that promise to Israel? Look at how He makes the offer. In verse 3 He makes the offer to the House of Jacob and the Children of Israel. Why the difference if the references are to the same people? Jacob refers to their fleshly or earthly side and Israel refers to their spiritual or Godly nature. So YAHWEH is making an appeal to both natures of His chosen people. He wants us to apply His Torah to both our human nature and to our spiritual nature. Man is flesh and spirit and God created us that way for a reason. His covenant, the Torah, deals with both sides of our nature and when we apply the Torah of God to both our human and spirit natures we become one with Him.

But we need to understand that it is not through the Torah alone that we can accomplish this. The Torah applied without the spirit to guide us will become no more than legalism and it is that legalism that Yeshua and Shaul/Paul fought against. The Torah must be internalized and lived out the same as we live and breath. It must become an integral part of our makeup or else we will fall short of the goal that God has set for us. In following the Torah without love and mercy we have fallen short of the goal but at the same time by rejecting the Torah completely and only abiding by those parts that we agree with we have also fallen short of the goal.

So what is the answer?

Isaiah 9:5-6 (6-7)

5 For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us, and the dominion will rest on his shoulder; the wondrous Advisor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, called his name Sar-shalom [Prince of Peace]; 6 upon the one with the greatness in dominion and the boundless peace that will prevail on the throne of David and on his kingdom, to establish it and sustain it through justice and righteousness, from now to eternity. The zealousness of YAHWEH, Master of Legions, will accomplish this!

Neatly done don't you think? What I mean is how neatly tied together is this week's Torah portion and the section I felt led to comment on with the Haftarah portion where we see the solution that YAHWEH provided to our shortcomings. In this passage from Isaiah we have the promise of our salvation. But more importantly we see the Godhead all rolled up into one. The child who has been born is called a son, the authority of the Kingdom will be His, He is Counselor - as in the Comforter the Ruach HaKodesh the Holy Spirit, He is Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace, the one who will sit upon the throne of David and establish His Kingdom through justice and righteousness for all eternity.

What a description of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit! The Godhead all rolled up into one neat package as only God can do. It is through God that we will become that kingdom of priests and a holy people. It is not what we will do through our own power but what God will do through us as we yield ourselves to Him. While Israel may have come up short at Mount Sinai, the Israel that God is calling back together today will not. Why? Because we are not afraid to listen to the voice of God. We are not so stiff necked that we will refuse to submit to Him. We are not so self-centered that we think that the universe revolves around us.

1 Peter 2:4-10

4 To whom you have drawn near, that he is the living stone that the sons of men have rejected, but to God is chosen and honored. 5 And you also, as living stones, are built up and become spiritual temples and holy cohenim to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable before God through Yeshua the Messiah. 6 For it is written in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Tziyon an approved and honorable chief corner stone and he who believes in him will not be ashamed [Psalm 118:22]. 7 Therefore, to you who trust this honor is given. But to those who are not convinced, [The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone [Isaiah 8:14], 8 and he is a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. And they stumbled by him [Isaiah 28:16] in that they were not persuaded by the word to which they were established. 9 Now you are a chosen tribe [see Isaiah 43:20; Deu 7:6; 10:15] that serves as a Cohen for the Kingdom [Exo 19:6; Isaiah 61:6], a holy people [Exo 19:6], a redeemed congregation , [that] you might declare the praises of him who called you from darkness to his precious light, 10 You who from before were considered not a people, but now are the people of God. Also, there were no mercies upon you, but now mercies are poured out upon you [Hosea 2:25 (23)].

Yeshua, God and Messiah, Spirit and Man all rolled up into one is our High Priest and when we accept Him as our Redeemer we become His priests as He meant for Israel to become His nation of priests at Mount Sinai. But we stand before a new Mount Sinai today. That Mount Sinai is Yeshua Himself, God in the flesh. Will you turn from His voice in these last days as the Children of Israel turned from voice those many millenniums ago? The promise and the covenant are yours as YOU ARE THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL! Will you step up or will you turn away? The choice is yours.

Where would Torah be, without a hungry heart to taste it, a thirsty mind to drink it? Let me be one who receives Torah today, when I sit in my house, when I walk by the way, when I lie down and when I rise up, so that Torah becomes the way I live.

18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
