Proverbs 4:20-24 NASB
20 My son, give attention to my words;
Incline
your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your sight;
Keep
them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them
And
health to all their body.
23 Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For
from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth
And
put devious speech far from you.[2]
Quote Of The Day:
S.I.McMillen
M.D. “None of these Diseases”[3]
“Emotional
stress can irritate or precipitate heart attacks, strokes, ulcers, asthma and many
other diseases. As physicians, we can
prescribe medicines to palliate the symptoms, but we can do little to eradicate the underlying cause-emotional
turmoil.”
“After God
led the Israelites out of Egypt, He promised His people that if they would obey
His statutes, He would put “none of these diseases” upon them. Was this a trustworthy promise? Could submitting to a code of “restrictive”
rules lead to freedom from sicknesses? Could this promise remain pertinent even
in the twentieth century?
Yes! Medical
science is still discovering how obedience to the ancient prescriptions saved
the primitive Hebrews from the scourges of epidemic plaques; and medical
research is constantly proving the timeless potency of the divine prescription
for modern diseases. Yes! Obedience to biblical precepts is still the
most effective way to prevent many of the afflictions of mankind.
Peace does
not come from capsules. Peace can only
come from the source of peace, who said to His disciples “Peace I leave with you
my peace I give unto you, not as the
world giveth, give I unto you. Let not
your heart be troubled..(John 14:27)
Deborah’s Drash Commentary:
Yahweh’s Prescription for Physical and
Emotional Health
Part I
Yahweh
has promised us salvation, deliverance, health and peace in His Torah/Word,
however we have a responsibility also to believe and act on His word in order
to see these promises manifest themselves in our lives.
James
1:22-25 Amplified Bible
22 But be doers of the Word [obey the
message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into
deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].
23 For if anyone only listens to the Word
without obeying it and being a doer of it, he is like a man who looks
carefully at his [own] natural face in a mirror;
24 For he thoughtfully observes himself, and
then goes off and promptly forgets what he was like.
25 But he who looks carefully
into the faultless law, the [law] of liberty, and is faithful to it and
perseveres in looking into it, being not a heedless listener who forgets but
an active doer [who obeys], he shall be blessed in his doing (his life of
obedience).[4]
Yahweh
works in many ways to bring healing to our bodies both physically and
emotionally, but the main way is by Faith in His Torah/Word.
Adonai expects us to take
care of our bodies. We can not shove
anything we want into our mouths and expect to keep our bodies healthy. We need to exercise and eat a well balanced
and Kosher diet as prescribed in His Holy Torah. It has been proven medically that God’s dietary laws are the
best. I know in my own life that
Adonai has dealt with me about eating correctly in order to run the race
effectively for His kingdom. Not only
is physical health important, but so is emotional health because emotional
problems trigger health problems. But
Yahweh’s Torah/Word has the right prescription to keep us healthy and happy if
we follow His Ways.
Yahweh uses doctors and
medicine also , but God’s medicine is the best, His Holy Torah/Word. If at all possible try to find a Christian
Doctor who believes in the power of prayer, there are some out there and what a
bonus to have a Doctor who will pray and agree with you for your healing as
well as help you in the natural with health problems you may be facing.
Faith in
His Promises are what He requires of us, we believe His word and He watches
over His word to perform it in our lives.
Hab 2:4 Behold, his soul which
is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
Mat 9:2 And, behold, they
brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith
said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven
thee.
Mat 9:22 But Jesus turned
him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith
hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Mat 9:29 Then touched he
their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
Luk 17:6 And the Lord said,
If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this
sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea;
and it should obey you.
Rom 10:17 So then faith
cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
1Co 2:5 That your faith
should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Heb 11:1 Now faith
is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Yahweh
has already done His part, we need to do our part and walk in obedience to His
Holy Torah and live Holy lives and believe His Word if we want to walk in
physical and emotional health.
We need
to take care of our Temples – spiritually and physically, which means eating
correctly and taking in the Word daily and Living a Holy Lifestyle.
1
Corinthians 3:16-17 NASB
16 Do you not
know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you?
17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will
destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.[5]
11 Corinthians 6:16 NASB
16 Or what agreement has the temple of God
with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said,
“I will dwell in them and walk among them;
And
I will
be their God, and they shall be My
people.
17 “Therefore, come out from their
midst and be separate,” says the Lord.
“And do not touch what is unclean;
And I will welcome
you.
18 “And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be
sons and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty.[6]
Ephesians 2:21 Amplified
Bible
21 In Him
the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously, and it
continues to rise (grow, increase) into a holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary
dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the presence of the Lord].[7]
Proverbs 23:21 KJV
For the drunkard and the glutton shall
come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man
with rags.
Proverbs 23:3 KVJ
Be
not desirous of his dainties: for they are
deceitful meat.
Ephesians 5:29
29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but
nourishes and carefully protects and cherishes it, as Christ does the
church,[8]
Fasting
is a good thing, it brings deliverance to others and ourselves and teaches us
discipline and self control and opens our hearts to hear from Yahweh.
Arthur Wallis “God’s
Chosen Fast” Dietetics is a vast
subject outside the scope of this book.
Nevertheless, the practice of fasting tends to exercise our minds on the
matter of disciplined eating- both what we eat and how we eat it . “Some people
eat to live and others live to eat” Some
eat with their health in view, and others only of their appetitite. Wrong
eating is the cause of many ills. To put the thing on the highest plance, we
owe it to the God who gave us these bodies to keep them as fit as possible to
serve Him”
Read “God’s Chosen Fast”
for an excellent guide to Biblical Fasting. (See list below)
Isaiah
58:2-12 NASB
1 “Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice
like a trumpet,
And declare to My
people their transgression
And to the house of
Jacob their sins.
2 “Yet they seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
As a nation that
has done righteousness
And has not
forsaken the ordinance of their God.
They ask Me for just
decisions,
They delight in the
nearness of God.
3 ‘Why have we fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’
Behold, on the day
of your fast you find your desire,
And drive hard all
your workers.
4 “Behold, you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a
wicked fist.
You do not fast
like you do today to make your voice heard on high.
5 “Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble
himself?
Is it for bowing
one’s head like a reed
And for spreading
out sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this
a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord?
6 “Is this not the fast which I choose,
To loosen the bonds
of wickedness,
To undo the bands
of the yoke,
And to let the
oppressed go free
And break every
yoke?
7 “Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the
homeless poor into the house;
When you see the
naked, to cover him;
And not to hide
yourself from your own flesh?
8 “Then your light will break out like the dawn,
And your recovery
will speedily spring forth;
And your
righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
9 “Then you will call, and the Lord
will answer;
You will cry, and
He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you remove the
yoke from your midst,
The pointing of the
finger and speaking wickedness,
10 And if you give yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the
desire of the afflicted,
Then your light
will rise in darkness
And your gloom will
become like midday.
11 “And the Lord will
continually guide you,
And satisfy your
desire in scorched places,
And give
strength to your bones;
And you will be
like a watered garden,
And like a
spring of water whose waters do not fail.
12 “Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will raise
up the age-old foundations;
And you will be
called the repairer of the breach,
The restorer of
the streets in which to dwell.
We need
to cast our cares upon Him, worry will rob us of health and wholeness and peace of mind.
Mar 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the
word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Luk 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they,
which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and
riches and pleasures of this life, and
bring no fruit to perfection.
Luk 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any
time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares
of this life, and so that day come upon
you unawares.
Phillippians 4:6-7 Amplified Bible
6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about
anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and
petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants
known to God.
7 And God’s peace [shall be yours, that
tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so
fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever
sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and
mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.[10]
We need
to walk in the fruit of the Ruach Ha Kodesh/The Holy Spirit
Galatians
5:16-26 Amplified Bible
16 But I say, walk and live [habitually]
in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by
the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires
of the flesh (of human nature without God).
17 For the desires of the flesh are opposed to
the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh
(godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually
withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but
are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
18 But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy]
Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.
19 Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are
clear (obvious): they are immorality, impurity, indecency,
20 Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy,
anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit
(factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies),
21 Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like.
I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things
shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work
which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace,
patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence),
faithfulness,
23 Gentleness (meekness, humility),
self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law
[that can bring a charge].
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the
Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions
and appetites and desires.
25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also
walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go
forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]
26 Let us
not become vainglorious and self-conceited, competitive and
challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and
being jealous of one another.[11]
We need to
get rid of anger, resentment and
unforgiveness which can cause sickness in our lives.
Ephesians
4:31 Amplified Bible
31 Let all
bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment
(anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander
(evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all
malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).[12]
Colossians
3:8-10
8 But now put away and rid yourselves
[completely] of all these things: anger, rage, bad feeling toward others,
curses and slander, and foulmouthed abuse and shameful utterances
from your lips!
9 Do not lie to one another, for you have
stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices,
10
And have clothed
yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of
being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge
upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it. [Gen.
1:26].[13]
Pro
15:1 KJV
A
soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
Pro
15:18 KJV
A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
Pro
16:32 KJV
He that is slow to anger is better
than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
Pro
19:11 KJV
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger;
and it is his glory to pass over a
transgression.
Ecc
7:9 KJV
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger
resteth in the bosom of fools.
Walk in
Love as Messiah commanded us. Faith
works by Love they are the power twins in our spiritual walk/halakhah.
Galatians
5:6 KJV
6
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor
uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Galatians
5:6 Jewish New Testament
6 When we are united with the Messiah Yeshua, neither
being circumcised nor being uncircumcised matters; what matters is trusting
faithfulness expressing itself through love. 7[14]
David
Stern “Jewish New Testament Commentary
Neither being circumcised nor being
uncircumcised matters, so far as being accepted by God on the ground of
trusting Yeshua is concerned.
What matters is trust and faithfulness,
expressing themselves through good
deeds done in love. In both the Tanakh and the New Testament
“love” refers to works, not mere feelings. Thus v. 6 powerfully refutes the
idea that Christianity and Messianic Judaism elevate belief over action, creed
over deed[15]
Ya’akov/James
2 Jewish New Testament
2 1 My
brothers, practice the faith of our Lord Yeshua, the glorious Messiah, without
showing favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your synagogue
wearing gold rings and fancy clothes, and also a poor man comes in dressed in
rags. 3 If you show more respect to the man wearing the fancy
clothes and say to him, “Have this good seat here,” while to the poor man you
say, “You, stand over there,” or, “Sit down on the floor by my feet,” 4 then
aren’t you creating distinctions among yourselves, and haven’t you made
yourselves into judges with evil motives?
5 Listen, my dear brothers, hasn’t
God chosen the poor of the world to be rich in faith and to receive the Kingdom
which he promised to those who love him? 6 But you despise the poor!
Aren’t the rich the ones who oppress you and drag you into court? 7 Aren’t
they the ones who insult the good name of Him to whom you belong? 8 If
you truly attain the goal of Kingdom Torah, in conformity with the
passage that says, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”you are doing well. 9
But if you show favoritism, your actions constitute sin, since you are
convicted under the Torah as transgressors.
10 For a person who keeps the
whole Torah, yet stumbles at one point, has become guilty of breaking
them all. 11 For the One who said, “Don’t commit adultery,”also
said, “Don’t murder.”Now, if you don’t commit adultery but do murder,
you have become a transgressor of the Torah.
12 Keep speaking and acting like
people who will be judged by a Torah which gives freedom. 13 For
judgment will be without mercy toward one who doesn’t show mercy; but mercy
wins out over judgment.
14 What good is it, my brothers,
if someone claims to have faith but has no actions to prove it? Is such “faith”
able to save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes
and daily food, 16 and someone says to him, “Shalom!, Keep
warm and eat hearty!” without giving him what he needs, what good does it do? 17
Thus, faith by itself, unaccompanied by actions, is dead.
18 But someone will say that you
have faith and I have actions. Show me this faith of yours without the actions,
and I will show you my faith by my actions! 19 You believe that “God
is one” ?Good for you? The demons believe it too—the thought makes them
shudder with fear! 20 But, foolish fellow, do you want to be shown
that such “faith” apart from actions is barren?
21 Wasn’t Avraham avinu
declared righteous because of actions when he offered up his son Yitzchak on
the altar? 22 You see that his faith worked with his actions; by the
actions the faith was made complete; 23 and the passage of the Tanakh
was fulfilled which says, “Avraham had faith in God, and it was credited to
his account as righteousness.”He was even called God’s friend. 24
You see that a person is declared righteous because of actions and not
because of faith alone.
25 Likewise,
wasn’t Rachav the prostitute also declared righteous because of actions when
she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another route? 26 Indeed,
just as the body without a spirit is dead, so too faith without actions is
dead.[16]
Matthew
5:44-48 Amplified Bible
44 But I tell you, Love your enemies and pray
for those who persecute you, [Prov. 25:21, 22].
45 To show that you are the children of your Father
Who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and
makes the rain fall upon the upright and the wrongdoers [alike].
46 For if you love those who love you, what
reward can you have? Do not even the tax collectors do that?
47 And if you greet only your brethren, what
more than others are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles (the heathen) do that?
48You, therefore, must
be perfect [growing into complete maturity of godliness in mind and character,
having reached the proper height of virtue and integrity], as your heavenly
Father is perfect. [Lev. 19:2, 18].
Matthew 22:36-40 Complete Jewish Bible
36 “Rabbi, which of the mitzvot in the Torah
is the most important?” 37 He told him, “‘You are to love Adonai
your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your,
strength.’ 38 This is the greatest and most important mitzvah.
39 And a second is similar to it, ‘You are to love your neighbor
as yourself.’ 40 All of the Torah and the Prophets are
dependent on these two mitzvot.”[17]
1
Corinthians 13 – Amplified Bible
IF I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of
angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such
as is inspired by God’s love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging
cymbal.
2 And if I have prophetic powers (the gift of
interpreting the divine will and purpose), and understand all the secret truths
and mysteries and possess all knowledge, and if I have [sufficient]
faith so that I can remove mountains, but have not love (God’s love in me) I am
nothing (a useless nobody).
3 Even if I dole out all that I have [to the
poor in providing] food, and if I surrender my body to be burned or in order
that I may glory, but have not love (God’s love in me), I gain nothing.
4 Love endures long and is patient and
kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not
boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.
5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated
with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly.
Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own
way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or
resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to
a suffered wrong].
6 It does not rejoice at injustice and
unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.
7 Love bears up under anything and
everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its
hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without
weakening].
8 Love never fails [never fades out or becomes
obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy (the gift of interpreting the
divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for
tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will
pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth].
9 For our knowledge is fragmentary (incomplete
and imperfect), and our prophecy (our teaching) is fragmentary (incomplete and
imperfect).
10 But when the complete and perfect
(total) comes, the incomplete and imperfect will vanish away (become
antiquated, void, and superseded).
11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I
thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; now that I have become a man, I
am done with childish ways and have put them aside.
12 For now we are looking in a mirror that
gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma],
but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to
face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and
understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been
fully and clearly known and understood [by God].
13
And so faith, hope,
love abide [faith—conviction and belief respecting man’s relation to God and
divine things; hope—joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation;
love—true affection for God and man, growing out of God’s love for and in us],
these three; but the greatest of these is love. [18] [i]

[i] David Sterns Commentary –
Complete Jewish Bible on 1 Corinthians 13
13:1–14:1a This hymn, which can stand alone yet fits its context perfectly, is
the great “love chapter,” just as Messianic Jews 11 is the great “faith
chapter” and chapter 15 below the great “resurrection chapter.” Love is “the
best way of all” (12:31) because it “fulfills the entire Torah” (Ro 13:8–10, Ga 5:14; see
also Mt 22:34–40, Ya 2:8). The word in Greek for “love” is “agapeÆ,” defined in the New
Testament (by passages such as this chapter, Yo 3:16, 17:23–26 and 1 Yn
2:5–4:21) as giving of and from oneself; love expresses itself in acts of
benevolence, kindness and mercy in which heart, mind and will are united
because they are motivated and empowered by God. Such love goes beyond what one
can generate of oneself, because it has its origin in God. When such love is
experienced by one person from another, the experience is of God’s love channeled
through that other.
Some Christian commentators
stress the supposed uniqueness and superiority of agapeÆ over the ahavah (“love”) and chesed (“loving-kindness”) of the Tanakh. But this is surely a false
distinction, for the love of God is not different now from what it was then;
nor is it more available now than before. This false differentiation has opened
the way for Jewish critics such as Leo Baeck (in The Essence of Judaism)
to present New Testament religion as romantic, based on mere feelings. Rather,
the New Testament expositions of agapeÆ clarify the nature of the
very ahavah and chesed spoken of in the Tanakh. [i]
4–7 This description of love is not of its outward
manifestations but of its inward properties. Sha’ul does not, however, define love
as inward feelings, because love must act (1 Yn 2:5–4:21)—faith works itself
out in love (Ga 5:6). It is precisely because love produces deeds that it
fulfills the Torah (Ro 13:8–10&N). [i]
13 Three things last: trust,
hope, love.
The formula of “three great things” is common in Jewish literature. The same
three appear in Colossians 1:4–5. Compare Micah 6:8, and this example from the
Mishna:
“Rabban Shim‘on ben-Gamli’el
said, ‘The world is sustained by three things: judgment, truth and peace, as it
is said, “Execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates” (Zechariah
8:16).’ ” (Avot 1:18) [i]
