2:16 Amplified Translation
16 Yet we know that a man is justified or
reckoned righteous and in right standing with God not by works of the
Law, but [only] through faith and [absolute] reliance on and
adherence to and trust in Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
[Therefore] even we [ourselves] have believed on Christ Jesus, in order to be justified
by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law [for we cannot be justified by
any observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses], because by keeping
legal rituals and by works no human being can ever be justified
(declared righteous and put in right standing with God). [Ps. 143:2].[2]
Quote Of The Day:
Rick Joyner
“Man was
created to have fellowship with God and to walk with Him daily just as Adam did
before the fall. Because of this there
is a void in our soul that can only be filled by a daily encounter with the
Lord. The new creation man is created for something even greater – we are
created to actually be the dwelling place of God. He lives in us! The One
who created the universe lives in each one of us. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are
the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” If anyone begins to really live by this
truth they will be able to easily move mountains and drop them into the sea.”
Deborah’s Drash Commentary:
Sarah – Faith to Conceive
Hebrews 11:11 Amplified Translation
11 Because of faith also Sarah herself received
physical power to conceive a child, even when she was long past the age for it,
because she considered [God] Who had given her the promise to be reliable and
trustworthy and true to His word. [Gen. 17:19; 18:11–14; 21:2].[3]
Genesis 17:15-19
15 Then God
said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai,
but Sarah shall be her name.
16“I will bless her, and indeed I will
give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations;
kings of peoples will come from her.”
17Then Abraham fell on his face and
laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man one hundred
years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
18And Abraham said to God, “Oh that
Ishmael might live before You!”
19
But God said, “No,
but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and
I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his
descendants after him.[4]
Genesis 18:11-14
9 Then
they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the
tent.”
10 He said, “I will surely return to you
at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah
was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old,
advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing.
12 Sarah laughed to herself, saying,
“After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I
indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’
14
“Is anything too difficult
for the Lord? At the appointed
time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
15
Sarah denied it however,
saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did
laugh.”[5]
Genesis 21:1-8
1 Then the Lord
took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord
did for Sarah as He had promised.
2 So
Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time
of which God had spoken to him.
3 Abraham
called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
4 Then
Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had
commanded him.
5 Now
Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah
said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.”
7 And
she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet
I have borne him a son in his old age.”
8The
child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac
was weaned.[6]
This
was to be a miraculous birth, there would be no doubt that the child of promise
would be a miracle. Sarah was 90 and
Abraham was 100, both past the time where the body could produce children, and
that is exactly why Yahweh waited for the time. There would be no doubt that this child was from Yahweh. Issac was conceived when there was no
possible way in the natural for Sarah to have a child.
Alfred
Edersheim
For
every human hope and prospect must be swept away, and the heir be, in the
fullest sense, the child of the promise, that so faith might receive directly from God that for
which it had waited. It was in these circumstances that Jehovah at last
once more appeared in visible form to Abram,—this time to establish and fulfil
the covenant which He had formerly made. Hence also now the admonition: “Walk
before Me, and be thou perfect,” which follows but can never precede the
covenant. In token of this established covenant, God enjoined upon Abram and
his descendants the rite of circumcision as sign and a seal; at
the same time changing the name of Abram, “father of elevation” (noble
chief?), into Abraham, “the father of a multitude,” and that of Sarai;
“the princely,” into Sarah, or “the princess,” to denote that through
these two the promise was to be fulfilled, and that from them the chosen race
was to spring. These tidings came upon Abraham with such joyous surprise
that, as in humble worship, he “fell upon his face,” he “laughed,” as he
considered within himself the circumstances of the case,—as Calvin remarks, not
from doubt or disbelief, but in gladness and wonder. To perpetuate the
remembrance of the wonder, the promised seed was to bear the name of Isaac, or
“laughter.” [7]
G-d
established a covenant and changed their name to produce faith in their hearts
and keep the promise before their eyes, the eyes of faith. Everytime their name was spoken they heard
“The Father of a Multitude” “The mother
of a Multtude”. G-d did this so they
would remember that it was G-d who was going to do this in their lives.
While
Abraham’s faith was thus exercised and blessed, the “evil men and seducers,”
among whom Lot had chosen his dwelling, had been waxing worse and worse, and
rapidly filling up the measure of their iniquity. That judgment which had long
hung over them like a dark cloud was now to burst in a terrible tempest. Abram
was sitting “in the tent door in the heat of the day,” when Jehovah once more
appeared in visible form to him. This time it was, as it seemed, three
wayfarers, whom the patriarch hastened to welcome to the rest and refreshment
of his abode. But the heavenly Guests were the Lord Himself and two angels, who
were to be the ministers of His avenging justice. There can be no doubt that
Abraham recognised the character of his heavenly Visitors, though, with the
delicacy and modesty so peculiarly his, he received and entertained them
according to the manner in which they presented themselves to him. The object
of their visit was twofold—the one bearing reference to Sarah, the other to
Abraham. If Sarah was to become the mother of the promised seed, she also
must learn to believe. Probably she had not received quite in faith the
account which Abraham had given of his last vision of Jehovah. At any rate, the
first inquiry of the three was after Sarah. The message of the birth of a son
was now addressed directly to her; and as her non-belief appeared in her
laughter, it was first reproved and then removed. While Abraham’s faith was thus exercised and blessed, the “evil

[8]
Sarah had to learn to believe in
order to conceive. What does it mean to
believe?
The Hebrew language developed in a nomadic agricultural culture. Because of
this much of the language is centered around this lifestyle. The more we
understand their way of life and culture, the more we can understand their
language. This benefits us, as Bible students, because we can better understand
the author's message if we better understand his language.
In our culture, concepts, words and ideas are
taught by using other concepts, words and ideas. Often this is a very difficult
task to accomplish. Since the Hebrew language is a task oriented language,
teaching these concepts, words and ideas are much easier.
The subject we are going to cover here, is a
prime example. If you wanted to teach your children what it means to believe,
how would you do it? If you think about it, it is very difficult thing to do.
In Genesis 4:20 we read about the first Nomad Jabal, a descendent of Adam
through Cain.
"And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and
of such as have cattle."
We know that Jabal and his descendents were
nomads from the simple fact they lived in tents and raised livestock. A tent
(ohel in Hebrew) is a portable shelter for the purpose of moving from one
grazing place to another. The Hebrew word used in the above for cattle is
"miqneh" which actually means any livestock property. This could be
cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, etc. When the livestock consumed the edible
vegetation in one area, the herder would then pack up his tent and his
belongings and move on to better grazing land.
Probably the most famous nomad is Abraham. He
traveled a great deal through the land of the Near East living in tents and
raising livestock.
The tent is a very important part of the nomads life. By looking at the many
words derived from this shelter we have tangible, hands on tools with which to
teach our children the basic concepts in the Bible. In this study we will be
looking at a tent stake. For those who have camped before, you are probably
familiar with these stakes. What is the most important factor when placing your
tent stakes? The ground. If you drive in soft ground, the tension on the rope
will pull the stake right out. You need very firm ground to hold the in. The
ideal ground would require a hammer to beat the stake in. In ground like this
the stake will remain secure in its position even in a strong wind. Let us now
look at a passage of Scripture that uses this "concept".
Isaiah 22:23 "I will drive him like a peg into a firm place, he will be
a seat of honor for the house of his father."
Here we have the stake (peg) being driven
into a "firm" place. The Hebrew word translated as "firm"
here is the verb "aman" which literally means "to be firm or
sure". When setting up our tent, we desire to find a spot where the ground
will be firm.
This verb "aman" is used 110 times in the Old Testament. Let us now
look at another passage using this same verb and see what it says.
Genesis 15:6 "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as
righteousness"
The word "believed" is the very same
Hebrew verb "aman". The picture we have from this is that Abram was
firm in his devotion to G-d. Just as a stake planted in firm ground supports
the tent even in a storm, Abram will support God even in the storms of life.
The question we now ask is, how did Abram remain firm? The verse just before
states;
Genesis 15:5,6 '[God] took [Abram] outside and said, "Look up at the
heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said
to him, "So shall your offspring be." Abram believed the LORD, and He
credited it to him as righteousness.'
We usually read this to mean that Abram believed
God's promise in verse 5. The problem with this is that the Hebrew verb
"aman" means more than just knowing something to be true. Why did God
give this promise to Abram?
Genesis 26:4,5 "I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars
in thr sky and I will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all
nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and kept my
requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws (Torah in Hebrew)".
G-d made this promise to Abram because he was
firm in his obedience to G-d. The Hebrew in Genesis 15:6 does not say Abram
believed G-d, it says he was firm in God. From Genesis 26:5 we see that he was
firm in his obedience to God and his Torah.
Sarah had to learn to
believe, to become firm in her obedience to G-d and his Torah as Avraham
learned to do in his walk with Yahweh.
She also
she had to conceive , (2029
- Hebrew2029 harah
haw-raw'
a primitive root; to be (or
become) pregnant, conceive (literally or figuratively):--been, be with child,
conceive, progenitor) in other words to become pregnant with the Torah in her heart.
When her
heart became pregnant with the Torah/Word, her faith was at the point where she
could receive the promise.
So we see that another key to faith
is to become FIRM IN GOD, or TO BE FIRM IN OBEDIENCE TO HIS TORAH/WORD, to
become pregnant with His Word in order to produce faith that receives. When we
do this, the miraculous happens.
Sarah came to a place where it
was impossible for her and Avraham to accomplish this on their own. That is exactly where G-d wanted them to be,
at a place where all natural resources were gone and only G-d could bring about
this promise.
G-d wants us to
believe for the impossible so He can do the impossible in our lives! That is the place of faith, this the place
G-d can work and do the impossible and bring about the miraculous in our lives
just as He did for Sarah.
We need to become Firm in our
obedience to His Torah/Word, and become
pregnant with His Torah/Word so then faith will spring forth in our hearts
that we may receive what is promised to
us in His Torah/Word and give birth to the promises of G-d.
