Faith that Saves – The Scarlet Thread of Redemption
Rahab
Hebrews 11:31
31 [Prompted] by faith Rahab the prostitute was
not destroyed along with those who refused to believe and obey, because
she had received the spies in peace [without enmity]. [Josh. 2:1–21; 6:22–25].[4]
Joshua 2
1 Then
Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go,
view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and came into the house of a
harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.
2 It
was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have
come here tonight to search out the land.”
3 And
the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who
have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out
all the land.”
4 But
the woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, “Yes, the men
came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
5 “It
came about when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went
out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will
overtake them.”
6 But
she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which
she had laid in order on the roof.
7 So
the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords; and as soon as
those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.
8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof,
9 and
said to the men, “I know that the Lord
has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that
all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you.
10 “For
we have heard how the Lord dried
up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you
did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and
Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
11 “When
we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any
longer because of you; for the Lord
your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.
12 “Now
therefore, please swear to me by the Lord,
since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my
father’s household, and give me a pledge of truth,
13 and
spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who
belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”
14 So
the men said to her, “Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours;
and it shall come about when the Lord
gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”
15 Then she let them down by a rope through
the window, for her house was on the city wall, so that she was living on the
wall.
16 She
said to them, “Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not happen
upon you, and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return.
Then afterward you may go on your way.”
17 The
men said to her, “We shall be free from this oath to you which you have
made us swear,
18 unless,
when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to
yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all
your father’s household.
19 “It
shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the
street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free;
but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head
if a hand is laid on him.
20 “But
if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be free from the oath which
you have made us swear.”
21 She
said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they
departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 They departed and came to the hill country, and remained
there for three days until the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had sought them
all along the road, but had not found them.
23 Then
the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and
came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they related to him all that had happened to
them.
24 They said to Joshua, “Surely the Lord has given all the land into our
hands; moreover, all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before us.”[5]
Joshua 6:22-25
22 Joshua
said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the harlot’s house and
bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.”
23 So
the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and
her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her
relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel.
24 They
burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold,
and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the
Lord.
25 However, Rahab the harlot and her
father’s household and all she had, Joshua spared; and she has lived in
the midst of Israel to this day,
for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.[6]
Here we see a picture of
Household Salvation, not only was Rahab saved from total destruction but her
entire family because of her act of faith.
Acts
16:30
30 And he brought them out [of the dungeon] and
said, Men, what is it necessary for me to do that I may be saved?
31 And they answered, Believe in the Lord
Jesus Christ [give yourself up to Him, take yourself out of your own
keeping and entrust yourself into His keeping] and you will be saved, [and this
applies both to] you and your household as well.[7]
Also we have a picture of
“The Scarlet Thread of Redemption” a
type of the Blood of Yeshua. This
Scarlet Thread in the window was a symbol of protection for her household, and
let the spies remember their promise to her to save her and her family because
of her help in getting them out of the city when they came to spie on Jericho.
Rahab — insolence; pride, a poetical
name applied to Egypt in Ps. 87:4; 89:10; Isa. 51:9, as “the proud one.”
Rahab, (Heb. Rahab; i.e., “broad,” “large”). When the Hebrews
were encamped at Shittim, in the “Arabah” or Jordan valley opposite Jericho,
ready to cross the river, Joshua, as a final preparation, sent out two spies to
“spy the land.” After five days they returned, having swum across the river,
which at this season, the month Abib, overflowed its banks from the melting of
the snow on Lebanon. The spies reported how it had fared with them (Josh.
2:1–7). They had been exposed to danger in Jericho, and had been saved by the
fidelity of Rahab the harlot, to whose house they had gone for protection. When
the city of Jericho fell (6:17–25), Rahab and her whole family were preserved
according to the promise of the spies, and were incorporated among the Jewish
people. She afterwards became the wife of Salmon, a prince of the tribe of
Judah (Ruth 4:21; 1 Chr. 2:11; Matt. 1:5). “Rahab’s being asked to bring out
the spies to the soldiers (Josh. 2:3) sent for them, is in strict keeping with
Eastern manners, which would not permit any man to enter a woman’s house
without her permission. The fact of her covering the spies with bundles of flax
which lay on her house-roof (2:6) is an ‘undesigned coincidence’ which strictly
corroborates the narrative. It was the time of the barley harvest, and flax and
barley are ripe at the same time in the Jordan valley, so that the bundles of
flax stalks might have been expected to be drying just then” (Geikie’s Hours,
etc., ii., 390)[8]

Bible History
As the spies neared the
city, the setting sun was casting his rays in richest variegated colouring on
the limestone mountains which surrounded the ancient Jericho like an
amphitheatre, rising closest, and to the height of from 1200 to 1500 feet, in
the north, where they bear the name of Quarantania, marking the
traditional site of the forty days of our Lord’s temptation; and thence
stretching with widening sweep towards the south. Friend or ally there was none
in that city, whose hospitality the two Israelites might have sought. To have
resorted to a khan or inn would have been to court the publicity which most of
all they wished to avoid. Under these circumstances, the choice of the house of
Rahab, the harlot, was certainly the wisest for their purpose. But even so, in the
excited state of the public mind, when, as we know (Josh. ii. 11), the terror
of Israel had fallen upon all, the arrival of two suspicious-looking strangers
could not remain a secret. So soon as the gates were shut, and escape seemed
impossible, the king sent to make captives of what he rightly judged to be
Israelitish spies. But Rahab had anticipated him. Arriving at the same
conclusion as the king, and expecting what would happen, she had “hid
them”—perhaps hastily—“with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order upon
the roof,” after the common Eastern fashion of drying flax on the flat roofs of
houses. By the adroit admission of the fact that two men, previously unknown to
her, had indeed come, to which she added the false statement that they had with
equal abruptness left just before the closing of the gates, she succeeded in
misleading the messengers of the king. The story of Rahab sounded likely
enough; she had seemingly been frank, nor was there any apparent motive for
untruthfulness on her part, but quite the opposite, as the same danger
threatened all the inhabitants of Jericho. As Rahab had suggested, the
messengers “pursued quickly” in the supposed wake of the Jewish emissaries,
which would have been “the way to Jordan, unto the fords,” by which they must
return to the camp of Israel, and the gates were again shut, to make escape
from Jericho impossible, if, after all, they had not quitted the city.
Thus far the device of
Rahab had succeeded. So soon as night settled upon the city, she repaired to
the roof, and acquainted the spies, who were ignorant of any danger, with what
had taken place. At the same time she explained the motives of her conduct.
They must indeed have listened with wonder, not unmingled with adoring
gratitude, as she told them how they, in Canaan, had heard what Jehovah had
done for Israel at the Red Sea, and that, by His help, the two powerful kings
of the Amorites had been “utterly destroyed.” The very language, in which Rahab
described the terror that had fallen upon her countrymen, was the same as that
uttered prophetically forty years before, when Moses and the children of Israel
sang the new song on the other side of the Red Sea, Ex. xv. 14–16 (comp. Ex.
xxiii. 27; Deut. ii. 25; xi. 25). But the effect of this knowledge of Jehovah’s
great doings differed according to the state of mind of those who heard of
them. In the Canaanites it called forth the energy of despair in resisting
Israel, or rather Israel’s God. But in Rahab’s heart it awakened far other
feelings. She knew that Jehovah had given to Israel the land—and far better
than even this, that “Jehovah your God, He is God in heaven above and in earth
beneath.” Knowing God’s purpose, she would shelter the spies, and so further
their errand; knowing that He alone was God, she and all near and dear to her
must not take part in the daring resistance of her countrymen, but seek safety
by separating themselves from them and joining the people of God. And so she
implored mercy for herself and her kindred in the day when Jehovah would surely
give Israel the victory. Such a request could not be refused, evidenced as its
genuineness had been by her “works.” The two spies solemnly acceded to it,
but on condition that she would prove true to the end, helping on their work by
still keeping their mission secret, and evidencing her faith by gathering on
the day of trial all her kindred within her house. That house should be
distinguished from all other dwellings in Jericho by exhibiting the same
“scarlet cord,” with which she let down the spies over the city wall upon which
her house was built. All throughout, this story is full of deepest symbolical
meaning. And in truth, one, prepared so to act, was in heart “an Israelite
indeed,” and her household already belonged to the “household of faith.”[9]
We are now in
circumstances to appreciate the faith by which the harlot Rahab perished not
with them that were disobedient,
when she had “received the spies with peace,” a faith which, as St. James
argues, evidenced itself “by works” (James ii. 25). In so doing, it
is not necessary either to represent her in her former life as other than she
really was, or even to extenuate her sin in returning a false answer to the
king of Jericho. Nor, on the other hand, do we wish to exaggerate the spiritual
condition to which she had attained. Remembering who, and what, and among
whom she had been all her life-time, her emphatic confession, that Jehovah, the
God of Israel, “He is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath;” her
unwavering faith in the truth of His promises, which moved her to self-denying
action at such danger and sacrifice, and supported her in it; her separation
from her countrymen; her conduct towards the spies at the risk of her life—all
show her to have had that faith which “is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things unseen;” not a “dead faith,” “without works,” but one
which “wrought with her works, and by works was made perfect.” And He Who
“giveth more grace” to them who wisely use what they have, marvellously owned and
blessed this “firstfruits” from among the Gentiles. Her history, which, in
all its circumstances, bears a remarkable analogy to that of the woman of
Samaria (John iv.), is recorded for the instruction of the Church. And, as in
the case of the Hebrew midwives who had preserved Israel (Ex. i. 21), God
also “made her a house.” She became the wife of Salmon, a prince of the tribe
of Judah, and from her sprang in direct line both David (Ruth iv. 21) and
David’s Lord (Matt. i. 4).
But as for the two
Israelitish spies, they hid themselves, according to Rahab’s advice, for three
days among the limestone caves and grottoes which abound in Mount Quarantania,
while their pursuers vainly searched for them in the opposite direction of the
fords of Jordan. When the fruitless pursuit had ceased, they made their way
back to Joshua, expressing to him their conviction, as the result of their
mission: “Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even
all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.”[10]

faith…
James 2:25-26
25 So also with Rahab the harlot—was she not
shown to be justified (pronounced righteous before God) by [good] deeds when
she took in the scouts (spies) and sent them away by a different route? [Josh.
2:1–21].

For as the
human body apart from the spirit is lifeless, so faith apart from [its] works
of obedience is also dead.[11]
Rahab through her act of faith was ingrafted into Israel and was no
longer a Gentile but named as a Heroine of faith and a daughter of Israel
through her actions. It did not matter
to Israel what her past was, by her actions she counted them as her brethren and her name is no
longer one of shame, but of glory and honor.
It doesn’t matter what your past is, once you have put your faith
in the Blood of Yeshua, you have been washed clean, made new and have been
engrafted into the Olive Tree of Israel, you are no longer GENTILES, but have
been grated INTO THE OLIVE TREE OF ISRAEL and have become a Messianic
Israelite, one who has put their faith in Yeshua HaMashiach/Jesus The Messiah.
Ephesians 2:19-22
19 Therefore you are no longer outsiders
(exiles, migrants, and aliens, excluded from the rights of citizens), but you
now share citizenship with the saints (God’s own people, consecrated and set
apart for Himself); and you belong to God’s [own] household.
20 You are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone.
21 In Him the whole structure is joined (bound,
welded) together harmoniously, and it continues to rise (grow, increase) into a
holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the
presence of the Lord].
22 In Him [and in fellowship with one
another] you yourselves also are being built up [into this structure] with the
rest, to form a fixed abode (dwelling place) of God in (by, through) the
Spirit.[12]
Romans
11: 1-26
I ASK then: Has God totally rejected and
disowned His people? Of course not! Why, I myself am an Israelite, a descendant
of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin! [I Sam. 12:22; Jer. 31:37;
33:24–26; Phil. 3:5].
2 No, God has not rejected and disowned
His people [whose destiny] He had marked out and appointed and
foreknown from the beginning. Do you not know what the Scripture says of
Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? [Ps. 94:14; I Kings 19].
3 Lord, they have killed Your prophets; they
have demolished Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.
4 But what is God’s reply to him? I have kept
for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal! [I Kings
19:18].
5 So too at the present time there is a
remnant (a small believing minority), selected (chosen) by grace (by God’s
unmerited favor and graciousness).
6 But if it is by grace (His unmerited favor
and graciousness), it is no longer conditioned on works or anything men have
done. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace [it would be meaningless].
7 What then [shall we conclude]? Israel failed
to obtain what it sought [God’s favor by obedience to the Law]. Only the elect
(those chosen few) obtained it, while the rest of them became callously
indifferent (blinded, hardened, and made insensible to it).
8 As it is written, God gave them a spirit (an
attitude) of stupor, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear,
[that has continued] down to this very day. [Deut. 29:4; Isa. 29:10].
9 And David says, Let their table (their
feasting, banqueting) become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a just
retribution [rebounding like a boomerang upon them]; [Ps. 69:22].
10 Let their eyes be darkened (dimmed) so that
they cannot see, and make them bend their back [stooping beneath their burden]
forever. [Ps. 69:23].
11 So I ask, Have they stumbled so as to fall
[to their utter spiritual ruin, irretrievably]? By no means! But through their
false step and transgression salvation [has come] to the Gentiles, so as
to arouse Israel [to see and feel what they forfeited] and so to make them
jealous.
12 Now if their stumbling (their lapse, their
transgression) has so enriched the world [at large], and if [Israel’s] failure
means such riches for the Gentiles, think what an enrichment and greater
advantage will follow their full reinstatement!
13 But now I am speaking to you who are
Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I lay great stress
on my ministry and magnify my office,
14 In the hope of making my fellow Jews jealous
[in order to stir them up to imitate, copy, and appropriate], and thus managing
to save some of them.
15 For if their rejection and exclusion
from the benefits of salvation were [overruled] for the reconciliation of a
world to God, what will their acceptance and admission mean? [It will be
nothing short of] life from the dead!
16 Now if the first handful of dough offered as
the firstfruits [Abraham and the patriarchs] is consecrated (holy), so is the
whole mass [the nation of Israel]; and if the root [Abraham] is consecrated
(holy), so are the branches. [Num. 15:19–21].
17 But if some of the branches were broken off,
while you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them to share the richness
[of the root and sap] of the olive tree,
18 Do not boast over the branches and
pride yourself at their expense. If you do boast and feel superior,
remember it is not you that support the root, but the root [that supports] you.
19 You will say then, Branches were broken
(pruned) off so that I might be grafted in!
20 That is true. But they were broken (pruned)
off because of their unbelief (their lack of real faith), and you are
established through faith [because you do believe]. So do not become proud and
conceited, but rather stand in awe and be reverently afraid.
21 For if God did not spare the natural
branches [because of unbelief], neither will He spare you [if you are guilty of
the same offense].
22 Then note and appreciate the gracious
kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but
God’s gracious kindness to you—provided you continue in His grace and
abide in His kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off (pruned away).
23 And even those others [the fallen branches,
Jews], if they do not persist in [clinging to] their unbelief, will be grafted
in, for God has the power to graft them in again.
24 For if you have been cut from what is by
nature a wild olive tree, and against nature grafted into a cultivated olive
tree, how much easier will it be to graft these natural [branches] back on [the
original parent stock of] their own olive tree.
25 Lest you be self-opinionated (wise in your
own conceits), I do not want you to miss this hidden truth and mystery,
brethren: a hardening (insensibility) has [temporarily] befallen a part of Israel
[to last] until the full number of the ingathering of the Gentiles has come in,
26 And so all Israel will
be saved. As it is written, The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will banish
ungodliness from Jacob. [Isa. 59:20, 21][13]
Isaiah 59:20-21
20“A
Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those who turn from transgression
in Jacob,” declares the Lord.
21 “As for Me,
this is My covenant with them,” says the Lord:
“My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall
not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the
mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord,
“from now and forever.”[14]
I believe we are living in
the Days when we are going to see a great Revival in Israel. G-d has not forsaken her and we better not
forsake her either! We need to stand
by Israel as Rahab did with prayers and intercessions and by taking a stand
with her, for if you have been Grafted Into the Olive Tree because of Messiah you are a part of Israel also and we
need as the Body of Messiah keep Israel in prayer that their eyes may be open
to Messiah and they will say the Words
Yeshua is longing to hear come from their lips “Blessed Is He who comes in The
Name of Adonai”

New Completee Jewish Bible Commentary by David Stern
As if to refute the theology,
developed later by the Church, which teaches that God is no longer interested
in the Jewish people as such, Yeshua here gives the condition for the salvation
of national Israel, as distinct from salvation of individual Jews and Gentiles.
In these verses, at the end of his ministry, he addresses the nation of Israel,
speaking to its capital, Yerushalayim, and thus continues the Tanakh’s
tradition of corporate salvation, which will come when Israel as a nation
blesses the Messiah, who comes in the name of Adonai. (It is
clear from 21:9 in its context that this phrase here refers to Yeshua himself.)
The fact that Yeshua will not return until Israel receives national salvation
is a powerful motivator for evangelizing Jewish people (see Ro 11:11–12&N,
15&N, 31&N); in fact Jewish evangelism can hasten his coming (2 Ke

Under
her wings. Compare
the use of such a natural metaphor in the Talmud. A non-Jew comes to Shammai
requesting to become a proselyte in order to be appointed cohen gadol.
Shammai drives him away with a stick, but Hillel receives him and teaches him
in a way that enables him to see for himself that the Torah prohibits a
proselyte from holding that office. He returns to Hillel and thanks him:
“Gentle Hillel, blessings on your head for bringing me under the wings of the Sh<khinah”
(Shabbat 31a). Likewise Moshe is described as being taken to his burial place
“wrapped in the wings of the Sh<khinah” (Sotah 13b).
God
is abandoning your house to you, leaving it desolate. As is clear from the use of the word
“house” in Jeremiah 22:5, which Yeshua alludes to, he is not speaking here
about the Temple, destroyed forty years later by Roman armies, but to the
future generations of Israel, who will be desolate of salvation so long as they
seek to achieve it by themselves (“abandoning your house to you”) and do
not welcome God’s Messiah Yeshua. [17]
