A Messianic Jewish Guide
“Praise creates
and bolsters faith. Praise is powerful.
When we praise God in detail for who He is and what He has done, when we praise
him constantly, we defeat Satan. Our
spirits are revived and we can most readily believe the promises of the Word.”

TORAH FOUNDATIONS
Vayakhel (He assembled) – P’kudei (Accounts)
Sh’mot (Exodus) 35:1-40:38
Commentary
by Will Bawgus
Last week in Ki Tissa, we looked
at B’tzal’el and Oholi’av. We discovered some awesome concepts of
who they are by using the Strong’s Concordance. These two men, B’tzal’el
and Oholi’av, where given the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, and
knowledge to build the Mishkan (Portable Temple) according to G-d’s
instructions.
Why does the Torah seem to be repeating itself concerning the Mishkan in
this week’s parashah? This is to show us that we must obey G-d in every detail.
It might seem pointless for the Torah to repeat all of the instructions for the
Mishkan, but the Torah is obviously trying to tell us something. So this
week we are going to continue our study of B’tzal’el and Oholi’av.
Exodus 36:1: “Now B’tzal’el and Oholi’av and every skillful
person in whom YHVH has put skill and understanding to know how to perform all
the work in the construction of the sanctuary, shall perform in accordance with
all that YHVH has commanded.”
In our past studies in Exodus, we have learned that we ourselves are
temples. Therefore, if we ourselves are temples, then we have laws and commands
to follow in detail to build ourselves into a dwelling place for YHVH
Ephesians 2:22: “In whom you are also being built
together into a dwelling of YHVH in the Spirit.”
To continue our study of B’tzal’el and Oholi’av, let us
use some of the definitions that we found last week in the Strong’s
Concordance in parashah Ki Tissa.
Last week in Ki Tissa, we connected B’tzal’el and Oholi’av
to Ephraim and Y’hudah. This week we are connecting them to
another concept.
“The
Image of G-d”
B’tzal’el,
in its Hebrew spelling has the root word “tzalem,” which means “image,” The
Hebrew letter bet (b) that is used means “in the,” and the last word used is
the word “El” which means “G-d.” With these root word meanings we come up with
B’tzal’el, to mean “In the image of G-d.” Now, with this in mind we can connect
B’tzal’el to two concepts: man and Yeshua.
Genesis 1:26: “Then G-d said, ‘Let us make man in
our image, according to our likeness.’”
Genesis 1:27: “And G-d created man in His own image, in the image of G-d
He created him; male and female He created them.”
Genesis 9:6: “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed,
for in the image of G-d He made man.”
Colossians 1:15: “And He (Yeshua) is the image of the invisible G-d, the
firstborn of all creation.”
2 Corinthians 4:4: “…in whose case the god of this world (satan) has
blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light (see
Proverbs 6:23) of the gospel of the glory of Mashiach, who is the image of
G-d.”
In the verses above, we have a man, B’tzal’el (in the image of
G-d), who is was the artesian of the physical tabernacle, and we have Yeshua
who is the image of G-d, Who was the artesian of the spiritual tabernacle. We
have also learned that G-d filled B’tzal’el with the spirit of wisdom,
understanding, and knowledge to build the tabernacle. He knew what it took to
build the temple because he was filled with the Spirit of G-d. Yeshua also had
this same Spirit.
Isaiah 11:1-2: “Then a shoot will spring from the
stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit, and the Spirit of
YHVH will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of
counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of YHVH.”
With the understanding that it takes the Spirit of G-d to
construct the temple and we are made in the image of G-d, we are responsible
for the physical building of our temple.
1 Corinthians 3:16: “Do you not know that you are
the temple of G-d, and that the Spirit of G-d dwells in You?”
What builds this temple of our body? Following the instructions of G-d
found in Torah. Our foundation is Yeshua, and our framework is Torah.
1 Corinthians 3:11: “For no man can lay a
foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Yeshua HaMashiach.”
Romans 2:12: “All who have sinned outside the framework of Torah are
outside the framework of Torah; and all who have sinned within the framework of
Torah will be judged by Torah.
·
·
The Torah is our blueprint for building our bodies to allow the Spirit of
Mashiach to build us up in the Spirit. There are instructions all through the
Torah on how to eat, and live. Following Torah keeps us pure for the Spirit of
G-d to build us together into one building. We are in charge of the outer and
G-d is in charge of the inner.
1 Corinthians 3:9-12: “For we are G-d’s fellow
workers; you are G-d’s field, G-d’s building. According to the grace of G-d
which was given to me, as a wise builder. I laid a foundation, and another is
building upon it. But let each man (image of G-d) be careful how he builds upon
it.”
Paul is warning us to build carefully upon the foundation which is Yeshua,
carefully. This means that there are instructions to follow; these instructions
are Torah.
Deuterotomy 6:24-25: “So YHVH commanded us to
observe all these statuettes, to fear YHVH our G-d for our good always and for
our survival, as it is today. And it will be righteousness for us if we are
careful to observe all this commandment before YHVH our G-d, just as He
commanded us.”
If we are careful to build on the foundation of Yeshua, with the framework
of Torah, G-d will fill us with the Spirit of understanding, wisdom, and
knowledge to craft the inner sanctuary. This brings us to B’tzal’el’s companion
Oholi’av.
Oholi’av’s name means “tent of the father.” When we build on Yeshua and Torah,
G-d provides a covering, a tent of protection, this is so He can dwell in us.
This tent is our companion as we walk in Torah. It is our outer G-dly man
reflecting our inner G-dly man. May we all grow more in Yeshua and Torah so we
can become a “Oholi’av” a “tent of the father,” a dwelling place for G-d.

Overview of Portion
Moshe relays the Almighty's commands to refrain from building the Mishkan (the
Tabernacle) on the Shabbat, to contribute items needed to build the Mishkan, to
construct the components of the Mishkan and the appurtenances of the Cohanim.
The craftsmen are selected, the work begins. The craftsmen report that there
are too many donations, and for the first and probably the only time in
fundraising history, the Israelites are told to refrain from bringing
additional contributions!
Pekudei includes an accounting of all the materials that went into the making
of the Mishkan and details of the construction of the clothing of the Cohanim.
The Tabernacle (another translation of Mishkan) is completed, Moshe examines
all of the components and gives his approval to the quality and exactness of
construction, the Almighty commands to erect the Tabernacle, it's erected and
the various vessels are placed in their proper place. Thus ends the Book of
Exodus!
Exodus 34:33-35
33 Moses finished speaking with them and placed a mask on his face. 34 When
Moses would come before YAHWEH to speak with Him, he would remove the mask
until his departure; then he would leave and tell the Children of Israel
whatever he had been commanded. 35 When the Children of Israel saw Moses' face that
Moses' face had become radiant, Moses out the mask back on his face, until he
came to speak with Him.
What was this glow that came from the face of Moses? I believe that is was the
glory of God, His Shechinah, that now had taken up residence within Moses and
radiated itself from inward to outward. Much as Adam and Chavah had been
'clothed' by the glory of Yahweh which kept their state of undress hidden so
now Moses gave the Children of Israel a taste of what was to come again when we
are in the presence of God. As Yeshua, Moses and Elijah were clothed on the
Mount of Transfiguration in that same glory, so too, one day we will also be
clothed in the Shechinah of God.
This power that was now coming forth from Moses kept him in a state of health
that at 120 years of age he was not ill, still had his eyesight and apparently
had the health of a much younger man. So much so that it was God Himself who
removed the life force from Moses in order to cause him to die. Think what we
will have when we sit in the presence of Yeshua and the Father and it by their
glory that we will no longer need a sun or a moon to bring us light as the
light will now come from the Source of all - God!
Exodus 40:34-38
34 The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of YAHWEH filled the
Tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting, for the cloud rested
upon it, and the glory of YAHWEH filled the Tabernacle. 36 When the cloud was
raised up from upon the Tabernacle, the Children of Israel would embark on all
their journeys. 37 If the cloud did not rise up, they would not embark, until
the day it rose up. 38 For the cloud of YAHWEH would be on the Tabernacle by
day, and fire would be on it at night, before the eyes of all of the House of
Israel throughout their journeys.
The very presence of Yahweh would rest upon the place that He had chosen to
reside in upon this earth. His glory or Shechinah would reside in the cloud by
day and in fire by night and when the presence of God moved so too would the
people. But the day is coming when God will no longer have to hide in a cloud
nor in a pillar of fire as we will be able to stand in His presence and drink
in His glory in all its power as Moses was able to sit in God's presence but
was protected by the cloud. We will not have any need of that protection as we
are covered by the blood of the lamb and one day soon we will be perfected
because of Him.
1 Kings 7:51-8:5
7:51 When all the work that King Solomon had done for the Temple of YAHWEH was
completed, Solomon brought that which his father David had sanctified, the
silver, the gold and the articles - and placed them in the treasuries of the
Temple of YAHWEH. 8:1 Then Solomon gathered together the elders of Israel and
all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the ancestral families of the
Children of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the Ark of the
Covenant of YAHWEH from the City of David, which is Zion. 2 They gathered
before King Solomon - every man of Israel - for the festival [of Sukkot], in
the month of Ethanim, which is the seventh month. 3 All the elders of Israel
came, and the Kohanim bore the Ark. 4 They brought up the Ark of YAHWEH, and
the Ten of Meeting, and all the sacred vessels that were in that Tent; the
Kohanim and the Levites brought them up. 5 King Solomon and the entire assembly
of Israel that had assembled with him were with him before the Ark! , offering
sheep and cattle, too abundant to be numbered or counted.
As the first Temple was dedicated on Sukkot so too will we be required to celebrate
Sukkot during the Messianic Age. So if Sukkot is about the Messianic Age and
the Messianic Age comes to pass and yet we will still be told to celebrate
Sukkot does this mean that all else that God has brought to pass is done away
with? I think not! Why do we choose to celebrate events that have come to pass?
To remember them. The same is true of the Torah and all that it contains. We do
this in remembrance of Yeshua and what He has done and will do. God's word is
eternal the same as His covenants. Nothing is done away with except death
through acceptance of Yeshua as Messiah. Only God Himself can do away with His
covenants and His Torah. Man has not been given the authority to do this.
Yeshua gave of Himself through His blood sacrifice for us.
As Solomon offered up animal sacrifices to dedicate the Temple Yeshua offered
Himself up once and only once to bring us to reconciliation with the Father. As
He was our Passover sacrifice we have been freed from our sins in transgressing
the Torah. As He entered once into the Holy of Holies in the heavenly Temple
and poured out His blood upon the mercy seat to make atonement for Israel
before the Father we must accept His sacrifice and allow Him to enter into us
and forgive us for our sins so that we may become partakers of His covenant
with Israel. The blood of animal sacrifices cannot take away our individual
sins only the blood of Yeshua. As the Yom Kippur sacrifice cleansed the High
Priest, the Temple and the Children of Israel so too does the sacrifice of Yeshua
cleanse His people Israel today. But in order to be able to enter into that
redeemed people we must, individually, accept Yeshua as our Redeemer through
His blood.
Revelation 15:5-8
5 And after these [things], I looked and the Temple of the tabernacle of
witness was opened in heaven. 6 And the seven angels came out from the Temple,
those who had the seven plagues, being clothed with pure and bright linen cloth
and girded on their breasts [with] a girdle of gold. 7 And one of the four
beasts gave to the seven angels, seven bowls filled with the wrath of God, who
is alive forever and ever. Amen. 8 And the Temple was filled with the smoke of
the glory of God and with His power and there was no one who was able to enter
the Temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were accomplished.
As Moses and Solomon and the priests could not enter into the Tabernacle or the
Temple when the Shechinah or Presence of Yahweh filled it so we see that the
same happened in the Temple that is in heaven. No one can enter into the
presence of Yahweh unless He allows them too. Yeshua came for His own. So while
He died that we could all have the gift of salvation only those who willingly
make the choice can receive His gift. Those who reject it will be driven out of
the presence of God because they will not be able to stand in the presence of
the glory of the Holy One of Israel as they could not minister in the House of
the Lord when His Presence filled it.
I desire that we could all enter into His presence and be clothed within and
without with the Shechinah of the Most High. It is my heartfelt prayer that we
would all one day be part of Israel, that Israel, redeemed by the blood of the
lamb - Yeshua! But we know that this will not be as He says so in His word but
that can not stop me from praying that it could be.
When the shadows lengthen, and evening comes, the busy world will be hushed,
and my week's work done. Then, companioned by Your presence, I shall rest.
