Colossians
1:14 Complete Jewish Bible
14 It is through his Son that we have
redemption—that is, our sins have been forgiven[2]
Quote Of The Day:
Mitch Glaser
“The Fall Feasts of Israel”
“The feasts of
Israel were Gods appointed times to remind His people that He was Lord of the
Calendar, the King of creation and that He was to be worshiped everyday. The
feasts of the Lord have a great deal to teach all who have crowned Him Lord of
their lives”
Deborah’s Drash Commentary:
Understanding the Passover/Pesach Season[3]
And ye shall observe this thing [Passover] for an ordinance
to thee and to thy sons for ever:.. And it shall come to pass, when your
children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? that ye shall say,
It is the sacrifice of the Lord 's Passover, who passed over the houses of the
children of Israel in Egypt... (Exodus [Shemot] 12:24,26-27).
Exodus 12:2,6,13-24
1
Now
the Lord said to Moses and Aaron
in the land of Egypt,
2
“This
month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of
the year to you.
6
‘You shall
keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of
the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.[4]
13 ‘The blood shall be a sign for you on the
houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no
plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 ‘Now this day will be a memorial to you,
and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as
a permanent ordinance.[5]
Exodus
2:23-24, 6:5-8
23 Now it came about in the
course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of
Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for
help because of their bondage rose up to God.
24 So
God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob.[6]
Exodus 6:5-8
5 “Furthermore I have heard the groaning of
the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I
have remembered My covenant.
6 “Say,
therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the Lord,
and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will
deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm
and with great judgments.
7 ‘Then
I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that
I am the Lord your God, who
brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
8 ‘I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I
am the Lord.’ ”[7]
The spiritual application that G-d wants
us to understand is this: Egypt (Mitzrayim) is a type of the world and
the world's system. Its ruler, Pharaoh, was a type of satan (Ha satan).
The bondage people are in when they live according to the ways of the world's
system is sin (John [Yochanan] 8:34).
John/Yochanan 8:34
34 Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you,
Whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin.[8]
Historically, the children of Israel were delivered
from the bondage in Egypt (Mitzrayim) by putting the blood of a lamb
upon the doorposts of their houses.
Exodus [Shemot] 12:2,6,13
1 Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land
of Egypt,
2 “This
month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of
the year to you.
3 “Speak
to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are
each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households,
a lamb for each household.
4 ‘Now
if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to
his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them;
according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb.
5 ‘Your
lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or
from the goats.
6 ‘You
shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole
assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.
7 ‘Moreover,
they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the
lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
8 ‘They
shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall
eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
9 ‘Do
not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with
fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails.
10 ‘And
you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it
until morning, you shall burn with fire.
11 ‘Now
you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on
your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the
Lord’s Passover.
12 ‘For
I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of
Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord.
13 ‘The blood shall be
a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will
pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I
strike the land of Egypt.[9]
Spiritually, this is a picture of the
Messiah Yeshua and how those who believe in Him are delivered from the
bondages of sin and the rule of satan (Ha satan) in their lives.
Yeshua
is the Lamb of G-d
John [Yochanan] 1:29
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to
him and said, Look! There is the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the
world! [Exod. 12:3; Isa. 53:7].[10]
Yeshua is also our Passover (Pesach)
1 Corinthians 5:7
7 Purge (clean out) the old leaven that you may be fresh (new)
dough, still uncontaminated [as you are], for Christ, our Passover [Lamb], has
been sacrificed.[11]
Those who follow Yeshua are the house of G-d (Hebrews
3:6; 1 Peter [Kefa] 2:5). The doorposts are our hearts.
Hebrews 3:6
6
But Christ
(the Messiah) was faithful over His [own Father’s] house as a Son [and Master
of it]. And it is we who are [now members] of this house, if we hold fast
and firm to the end our joyful and exultant confidence and sense of
triumph in our hope [in Christ].[12]
1 Peter/Kefa 2”5
5 [Come] and, like living stones, be yourselves built [into] a
spiritual house, for a holy (dedicated, consecrated) priesthood, to offer up
[those] spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God
through Jesus Christ.[13]
It
is only through trusting by faith (emunah) in the shed blood of Yeshua
(Jesus), our Passover (Pesach), that we are free from the bondage of
sin
Galatians 4:3-5,9; 5:1;
3 So we [Jewish Christians] also, when we were
minors, were kept like slaves under [the rules of the Hebrew ritual and subject
to] the elementary teachings of a system of external observations and
regulations.
4 But when the proper time had fully come, God
sent His Son, born of a woman, born subject to [the regulations of] the Law,
5
To
purchase the freedom of (to ransom, to redeem, to atone for) those who were
subject to the Law, that we might be adopted and have sonship conferred
upon us [and be recognized as God’s sons].[14]
9
Now,
however, that you have come to be acquainted with and understand and
know [the true] God, or rather to be understood and known by God, how
can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly and worthless
elementary things [of all religions before Christ came], whose slaves you once
more want to become?[15]
Galatians 5:1
IN [this] freedom Christ has made us free
[and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and
held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once
put off][16]
2 Peter [Kefa] 2:19
19 They promise them liberty, when they themselves are the slaves of
depravity and defilement—for by whatever anyone is made inferior or
worse or is overcome, to that [person or thing] he is enslaved.[17]
This is because the blood of Yeshua
redeems us from sin (Leviticus [Vayikra] 17:11; Ephesians 1:7;
Colossians 1:14; 1 Peter [Kefa] 1:18-19; 1 John [Yochanan]
1:7; Revelation 1:5).
Leviticus 17:11
11 ‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood,
and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for
it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’
Ephesians 1:7
7 In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His
blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and
trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His
gracious favor,[18]
Colossians 1:14
14 In Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which
means] the forgiveness of our sins.[19]
1 Peter/Kefa 1:18-19
18 You must know (recognize) that you were
redeemed (ransomed) from the useless (fruitless) way of living inherited by
tradition from [your] forefathers, not with corruptible things [such as] silver
and gold,
19 But [you were purchased] with the precious blood of Christ (the
Messiah), like that of a [sacrificial] lamb without blemish or spot.[20]
1 John/Yochanan 1:7
7 But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as
He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us
from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and
manifestations].[21]
Revelation 1:5
5 And from Jesus Christ the faithful and trustworthy
Witness, the Firstborn of the dead [first to be brought back to life] and the
Prince (Ruler) of the kings of the earth. To Him Who ever loves us and has once
[for all] loosed and freed us from our sins by His own blood, [Ps.
89:27].[22]
During Passover (Pesach), the
head of each household was to take a lamb of the first year on the tenth day of
the first month known as Nisan and set it aside until the fourteenth day
(Exodus [Shemot] 12:3-6). In the evening of the fourteenth day, at
exactly 3:00 p.m., the lamb was to be killed (Exodus [Shemot] 12:6).
The blood of the lamb was to be sprinkled on the lintel and two side posts of
the household door. The lamb was to be roasted with fire, with bitter herbs,
and with unleavened bread, and the entire household was to feast upon the body
of the lamb (Exodus [Shemot] 12:7-8). The people were instructed by
G-d to eat the lamb with haste and to be dressed and ready to leave Egypt (Mitzrayim)
at the midnight hour. This would be the fifteenth day of Nisan (Exodus [Shemot]
12:10-11).
Exodus 12:2-11
3 “Speak to all the congregation of Israel,
saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for
themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a lamb for each household.
4 ‘Now
if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to
his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them;
according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb.
5 ‘Your
lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or
from the goats.
6 ‘You
shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole
assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.
11 ‘Now
you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on
your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the
Lord’s Passover.[23]
At midnight
on that fateful evening in Egypt, death passed through the land. Every house
that did not have the token of the blood on the doorposts and lintel suffered
the judgment of G-d (Exodus [Shemot] 12:12-15).
Exodus
12:12-15
12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on
that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both
man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am
the Lord.
13 ‘The
blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the
blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when
I strike the land of Egypt.
14 ‘Now this day will be a memorial to you,
and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as
a permanent ordinance.
15
‘Seven
days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove
leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day
until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.[24]
The Hebrew word for Passover is Pesach, which means
"to pass or hover over." This word speaks to us about two things. First,
it shows the passing over in judgment from death and sin to life in Yeshua.
Second, it tells us about allowing, by faith (emunah), the blood of Yeshua
to hover over our lives and give us divine protection from the evil one (Ha
satan).
