Phillipians 2:5 – 11 Complete Jewish Bib

5 Let your attitude toward one another be governed by your being in union with the Messiah Yeshua:

6          Though he was in the form of God,

he did not regard equality with God

something to be possessed by force.

7          On the contrary, he emptied himself,

in that he took the form of a slave

by becoming like human beings are.

And when he appeared as a human being,

8          he humbled himself still more by

becoming obedient even to death—

death on a stake as a criminal!

9          Therefore God raised him to the highest place

and gave him the name above every name;

10         that in honor of the name given Yeshua,

every knee will bow—

in heaven, on earth and under the earth—

11         and every tongue will acknowledge

that Yeshua the Messiah is Adonai

to the glory of God the Father.

Deborah’s Drash Commentary:

What Yeshua Did For You!

Part IV

41. The righteousness of GOD.................................................11 Cor. 5:21, 1Pet 2:24

2 Cor 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 Pet 2:24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Righteousness[2]

RIGHTEOUSNESS, n. ri'chusness.

1. Purity of heart and rectitude of life; conformity of heart and life to the divine law. Righteousness, as used in Scripture and theology, in which it is chiefly used, is nearly equivalent to holiness, comprehending holy principles and affections of heart, and conformity of life to the divine law. It includes all we call justice, honesty and virtue, with holy affections; in short, it is true religion.

2. Applied to God, the perfection or holiness of his nature; exact rectitude; faithfulness.

3. The active and passive obedience of Christ, by which the law of God is fulfilled. Dan 9.

4. Justice; equity between man and man. Luke 1.

5. The cause of our justification.

The Lord our righteousness. Jer 23.

42. A partaker of His divine nature..........................................................11 Pet 1:4

2 Pet 1:4  Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Partaker

PARTA'KER, n. One who has or takes a part, share or portion in common with others; a sharer; a participator; usually followed by of.

If the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things-- Rom 15.

Sometimes followed by in.

Wish me partaker in thy happiness--

If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Mat 23.

1. An accomplice; an associate.

When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. Psa 1.

43. Called of God.....................................................................................11 Tim 1:9

2 Tim 1:9  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Called

CALLED, pp. Invited; summoned; addressed; named; appointed; invoked; assembled by order; recited.

44. The first fruits among His creation.....................................................James 1:18

James 1:18  Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Complete Jewish Bible Commentary

Having made his decision of his own free will, by grace and not because he owed it to us, God gave birth to us through a Word that can be relied upon (compare Ro 10:17). The Word of truth is Yeshua the Messiah; this is taught most clearly by the Gospel of Yochanan (see Yn 1:1, 14; 3:5–8; 15:26; 16:7–15; also 1 Yn 5:4–8). We are a kind of firstfruits of all that God created, as can be inferred from Ro 8:19–23, 29; 1C 15:20&N, 23. [3]

1 Corinthians 15:20 20 But the fact is that the Messiah has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have died.[4]

Sha’ul probably wrote this letter between Pesach (5:6–8) and Shavu>ot (16:8), during the season for presenting the firstfruits of the harvest at the Temple (Leviticus 23:9–15). Since we know that Sha’ul sees in the events and prescriptions of the Tanakh prefigurative events, examples and warnings pointing to God’s later workings in history (9:9–10; 10:1–11 Ga 4:21–5:1), it is not surprising that he sees Yeshua’s resurrection as the firstfruits of the larger harvest to come (v. 23; Yn 14:3, 19b–20; Ro 8:29). [5]

45. Chosen.................................................................1 Thes 1:4, Eph 1:4, 1 Pet 2:9

1 Th 1:4  Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

1 Pet 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood. 1 Pet 2.

47. Gods workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works.....................Eph 2:10

Eph 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Workmanship

WORKMANSHIP, n.

1. Manufacture; something made, particularly by manual labor. Exo 31.

2. That which is effected, made or produced. Eph 2.

3. The skill of a workman; or the execution or manner of making any thing. The workmanship of this cloth is admirable.

4. The art of working.

Created

CREATED, pp. Formed from nothing; caused to exist; produced; generated; invested with a new character; formed into new combinations, with a peculiar shape, constitution and properties; renewed.

48. The apple of MY FATHER’S eye...........................................Deut 32:10, Ps 17:8

Deu 32:10  He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

Psa 17:8  Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

Apple, Of The Eye “International Standard Bible Encyclopedia”

ap'-'-l: The eyeball, or globe of the eye, with pupil in center, called "apple" from its round shape. Its great value and careful protection by the eyelids automatically closing when there is the least possibility of danger made it the emblem of that which was most precious and jealously protected. The Hebrew terms for it were, 'ishon, diminutive of 'ish, "man," little man or mannikin, referring perhaps specially to the pupil, probably from "the little image one sees of himself when looking into another's pupil" (Davies' Lexicon). "He kept him (Israel) as the apple of his eye" (Deu_32:10); "Keep me as the apple of the eye," literally, "as the apple, the daughter of the eye" (Psa_17:8). "Keep my law (the Revised Version, margin "teaching") as the apple of thine eye" (Pro_7:2). Compare Pro_7:9 where it is used to denote what is the center (American Revised Version, "in the middle of the night"; the English Revised Version "in, the blackness of night"; margin "Hebrew pupil (of the eye)"); babhah perhaps an "opening," "gate"; others regard it as a mimetic word akin to Latin pupa, papilla ("He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye," i.e. Yahweh's; Zec_2:8); bath-'ayin, "daughter of the eye"; "Give thyself no respite, let not the apple of thine eye cease" (Lam_2:18), which means, either "sleep not," or "cease not to weep." kore, "young girl," "pupil of the eye": "He (the Lord) will keep the good deeds (the Revised Version (British and American) "bounty") of a man as the apple of the eye" (Ecclesiasticus 17:22); the Septuagint also has kore in all instances except Lam_2:18, where it has thugater, "daughter."

49. Healed by the stripes of JESUS.............................................1 Peter 2:24, Is 53:6

1 Pet 2:24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Isa 53:5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isa 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Healed

HE'ALED, pp. Restored to a sound state.

50. Being changed into His image............................................11 Cor. 3:18, Phil 1:6

2 Cor 3:18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Phil 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Changed

CHANGED, pp. Altered; varied; turned; converted; shifted

Image

IM'AGE, n. [L. imago.]

1. A representation or similitude of any person or thing, formed of a material substance; as an image wrought out of stone, wood or wax.

Whose is this image and superscription? Mat 22.

51. Raised up with Christ and seated in heavenly places..................Col 2:12, Eph 2:6

Col 2:12  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Complete Jewish Bible New Testament Commentary

11–13a According to v. 11, you Gentile believers[i] were circumcised spiritually, not physically, since it was a circumcision not done by human hands, but … done by the Messiah, the believer’s spiritual mohel (Hebrew for “circumciser”). Using graphic language, Sha’ul explains that this spiritual circumcision consisted in the Messiah’s stripping away not the literal foreskin but what it stands for, the old nature’s control over the body. Verse 13a makes the metaphor explicit by equating “foreskin” with a person’s sins and his old nature; one need only be present at a traditional Jewish b<rit-milah ceremony to understand very well the idea of “stripping away the foreskin.” Such spiritualizing of ritual circumcision was not invented by the New Testament writers; the Tanakh does the same thing when it speaks of circumcised hearts (Leviticus 26:41; Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Jeremiah 9:25; Ezekiel 44:7, 9) ears (Jeremiah 6:10) and lips (Exodus 6:12, 30); compare Ac 7:51&N.

However, an alternative understanding of the metaphor is possible. The Greek phrases rendered “the old nature’s control over the body” and “your old nature” are, literally, “the body of the flesh” and “your flesh” (see Ro 7:5N). But Sha’ul could be thinking of the entire physical body as the “foreskin” of the believer’s human spirit. The believer’s body will be “stripped away”—it will die; but because he is united with the Messiah it will be replaced by a spiritual body like Yeshua’s (1C 15:45–49&NN).

Before this “circumcision,” you were dead (compare Ep 2:1–3, Ro 6:2). But you were raised up along with him by God’s faithfulness that worked when he raised Yeshua from the dead. This is equivalent to the promise of Ro 8:11, that “if the Spirit of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead is living in you, then the One who raised the Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.”

Most translators and commentators understand this passage differently; the Revised Standard Version is typical: “ … you were … raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” This attributes your being raised up to your faith, not God’s faithfulness. My reasons for rendering as I do are the same as at Ro 3:22&N: “faith of God” should be understood grammatically as a subjective genitive.

You were also raised up. By using the past tense Sha’ul expresses how certain he is that God, in his faithfulness, will fulfill his promise to resurrect believers. See v. 10&N.

This does not say that a believer’s old nature no longer has any influence on him, but that he can rule over it. In traditional rabbinic terminology, the yetzer ra> (“evil inclination”) with which a person is born need not dominate the yetzer tov (“good inclination”; see Ro 5:12–21&N, 8:1–13).

When these verses are used to prove that Messianic Jews should not have their sons circumcised, the metaphor of spiritual circumcision is being tested beyond its strength. The verses do not say that spiritual circumcision has replaced physical circumcision for Messianic Jews, but that Gentile Christians are full members of God’s people through trusting God and his Messiah Yeshua, even though they have not taken the three steps necessary for conversion to non-Messianic Judaism. The verses say nothing about whether b<rit-milah is required, forbidden, or a matter of personal choice for Messianic Jews. However, that question is raised by Ac 16:1–3&NN, 21:20–21&NN.

This is the only passage in the New Testament where circumcision is identified with immersion (that is, with baptism; see Mt 3:1N). Sha’ul makes this identification because, as explained above, he is thinking in terms of Jewish initiation requirements and intends to reassure Gentile believers that they are fully initiated members of God’s people. But the comparison is with Gentile proselytization into Judaism, not with b<rit-milah for the sons of Jewish parents. It is not that immersion has now replaced circumcision, that Messianic Jews should baptize their baby sons instead of having a b<rit-milah for them. Rather, it is that, spiritually, all three of the Gentile proselyte initiation requirements—circumcision, immersion, and sacrifice—are fulfilled when one trusts in and is united with Yeshua.

Yeshua makes a spiritual circumcision of the heart, ears, and lips. It is accomplished at the time of one’s physical immersion in water, which is also a spiritual immersion by and into the Messiah, a union with him in his death (you were buried along with him; compare Ro 6:2). This union continues on through the present and into the future, culminating in resurrection (you were raised up along with him). The element of sacrifice enters in the discussion of his being executed on a stake in vv. 14–15. There is no clear dividing line between these three; for Sha’ul they are all one. Just as with proselytization into Judaism, the three requirements represent one spiritual event, entering God’s people. [6]

Eph 2:6  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Deborah’s Personal Commentary on the above commentary regarding “Gentile Christians”:

Remember my Jewish Brethren (I say this in love) that believers in Messiah who were “Former Gentiles”  are now a part of the commonwealth of Israel and are Messianic Israelites in G-ds eyes.  Once a person has accepted Yeshua as Messiah they are no longer Gentiles but now belong to the Commonwealth of Israel.  To still call a “Former Gentile” who has accepted Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah, the Messiah of Israel as Lord a “Gentile”

(GEN'TILE, n. [L. gentilis; from L. gens, nation, race; applied to pagans.]

In the scriptures, a pagan; a worshipper of false gods; any person not a Jew or a Christian; a heathen. The Hebrews included in the term goim or nations, all the tribes of men who had not received the true faith, and were not circumcised. The Christians translated goim by the L. gentes, and imitated the Jews in giving the name gentiles to all nations who were not Jews nor Christians. In civil affairs, the denomination was given to all nations who were not Romans.

GEN'TILE, a. Pertaining to pagans or heathens.) is an insult, in other words when we use the word Gentile Believer, or Gentile Christian we are saying Pagan Believer/Christian!  This is an Oxymoron (contradiction of terms). That old nature is passed away ALL has become new.  This does not take away from the special place Judah has this only adds to Israel’s family, the family of G-d found in Yeshua Ha Mashiach.

To be “In Messiah/Christ Yeshua/Jesus is to be grafted Into the Olive Tree/Israel.  If you are a believer in Messiah then you have been “Grafted Into” Israel also.  “Former Gentiles” are now a part of “Messianic Israel” In Messiah Yeshua.

We are now “ALL” accepted in the beloved Messiah Yeshua.  This is why Yahweh is stirring the hearts of non-Jewish brethren to return to their ROOTS!  Could Yahweh be re-gathering the 10 Lost Tribes(those who are believers in Messiah) by bringing them back to their ROOTS and taking hold of the Tzit Tzit of their Jewish Brethren IN Messiah? Is this why so many non-Jewish believers are returning to Ha Yesod/The Foundation of their faith?  I believe this is a super-natural work of the Ruach Ha Kodesh in these last days! Selah.
