Shabbat Teaching Outline

September 3rd, 2005

I.                   WHAT IS THE ANOINTING?

Hebrew:

Anointing: Strongs #4888- mishchah, meesh-khas; or moshchah, mosh-khaw;, from the H4886; unction (the act); by impl. A consecratory gift: (to be) anointed (-ing), ointment. Genesis 28:7

Anoint-Strongs #4886. mashcah, maw-shakh’; a prim. Root; to rub with oil, i.e. to anoint: by impl to consecrate; also to paint;-anoint, paint.

Anointed-Strongs #4899, mashiyach, maw-shee’-akh from H4886; anointed; usually a consecrated person (as a king, priest, or saint); spec. The Messiah:-anointed, Messiah. Isaiah 45:1

Greek:

Anointed-Greek 5548, probably, akin to Strongs G5530 through the idea of contact: to smear or rub with oil, i.e. (by impl) to consecrate to an office or religious service:-anoint.- Luke 4:18

Anointing-Greek 5545, chrisma, khris;-mah; from G5548; an unguent or smearing, i.e. (fig) the special endowment (“chrism”) of the Holy Spirit;-anointing, unction. 1 John 2:27

Christ-Strongs #5547. Christos, khris-tos; from G5548 anointed, i.e. The Messiah, Jesus

So when we say we are Messianic Believers, this is the Hebrew way of saying we are Christians, or followers of Jesus/Yeshua The Messiah.

Anoint describes the procedure of rubbing or smearing a person or thing, usually with oil, for the purpose of healing, setting apart, or embalming. A person can anoint himself, be anointed, or anoint another person or thing. While olive oil is the most common element mention in the Bible for use in anointing, oils produced from castor, bay, almond, myrtle, Cyprus, cedar, walnut, and fish were also used. In Esther 2:12, for example, the oil of myrrh is used as a cosmetic.

The Hebrew verb mashach (noun, messiah) and the Greek verb chrio (noun, christos) are translated “to anoint”. From ancient times the priests and kings were ceremonially anointed as a sign of official appointment to office, and as a symbol of God’s power upon them. The act was imbued with an element of awe. David would not harm King Saul because of the anointing the king had received (1 Sam. 24:6). Likewise, Israel (Ps. 89:38), and even Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1, this prophesy was given 175 years before Cyrus was even born!) are called God’s anointed because of God’s working through them.  Israel came to see each succeeding king as God’s anointed one, the messiah who would deliver them from their enemies and establish the nation as God’s presence on the earth.

In The New Testament/Brit HaDasha anoint is used to speak of daily grooming for hair (Matthew 6:17), for treating injury or illness (Luke 10:34) and for preparing a body for burial (Mark 16:1).

Yeshua/Jesus is God’s Anointed One, Our Savior, Prophet, Priest and King!

God’s presence and power are resident in the anointing.  Our anointing (the believer) is from God.                        2 Corinthians 1:21, 1 John 2:27) for the task of ministry.

A.     Anointing is the touch of God on you life.

1.      You can feel His touch-anyone who has been under the anointing knows what I am speaking about.

2.      It can come in big or small doses.

3.

B.     The anointing teaches and communicates life – 1 John 2:20, 27

1.      The Ruach Ha Kodesh/The Holy Spirit is a life-giving Spirit/Ruach

C.     The anointing works for you and not against you.

D.    The anointing comes by spending time in the presence of YHWH/God (by praise, worship and prayer). There are not shortcuts.

E.     God has different anointings for different offices. 1 Corinthians 12:1-18, 27-28, 1 Corinthians 1:21

1.      God can anoint you for special occasions and times of ministry

2.      A special anointing goes with your calling.

F.      Only the Ruach HaKodesh/The Holy Spirit can anoint, call, and equip you; man can impart the anointing to you but only YHWH/God can call you. 11 Corinthians 1:21

G.    In the Tenach/Old Testament, anointings came and went and were for prophets, priests and kings. Example, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah etc.  The anointing came upon them as needed, to fulfill God’s purpose for that particular moment.  Saul eventually lost His anointing due to sin and rebellion, that anointing was given to David as the next King.

1.      The Brit HaDasha says the anointing abides in you and it’s for all believers-1 John 2:27

H.    Christian (or Messiainc) means “little anointed ones”.

1.      Anoint means to “consecrate, refresh, paint, and fill in the cracks in a wall.  Praise YHWH that He knows how to fill in the CRACKS in our lives!

2.      The anointing consecrates you and sets you apart to do something specific. – 1 Corinthians 12

3.      You are weak in places so the anointing fills in those cracks to allow you to do what God calls you to do; it makes you strong! 1 Corinthians 1:22-31

I.       Things in the Tabernacle and Ark were anointed in the Tenach/The Old Testament.  Exodus 25:6, Exodus 30”31, Leviticus 10: 1-7

1.      The anointing oil was a special recipe and used for the Tabernacle and Priests.  When a Prophet, Priest or King was anointed, the oil was poured upon their head and allowed to drip down over them.

2.      You can’t make up your own anointing, YHWH/God determines who is anointed to do what job for His Kingdom.  We need to find out what we are anointed to do, and be obedient to that call and anointing upon our lives.

J.      Purposes of anointing

1.      It destroys the yoke (referring to bondage to sin i.e. habits, works of the flesh, etc) and sets you free. Isaiah 10:27; Isaiah 58:6; Isaiah 58:9

Definitions of Yoke From Websters 1828 Dictionary.  There is a “Bad” type of “Yoke” and a “Good” Type of Yoke.  The anointing destroys the “BAD YOKES” in our lives.

YOKE, n. [G., L., Gr.]

The Natural Yoke

1. A piece of timber, hollowed or made curving near each end, and fitted with bows for receiving the necks of oxen; by which means two are connected for drawing. From a ring or hook in the bow, a chain extends to the thing to be drawn, or to the yoke of another pair of oxen behind.

The Bad Yoke

2. A mark of servitude; slavery; bondage.

The Good Yoke

My yoke is easy. Mat 11.

This Yoke refers to the Torah, which is a different Yoke.  We are Yoked together with Messiah and with other believers so we can work together to fulfill His purposes here on the earth.

3. A chain; a link; a bond of connection; as the yoke of marriage.

4. A couple; a pair; as a yoke of oxen.

5. Service.

YOKE, v.t.

1. To put a yoke on; to join in a yoke; as, to yoke oxen, or a pair of oxen.

2. To couple; to join with another.  I.e. an believer is not the be “Yoked” unequally with a “Non Believer”.

Acts 15:10 – Yoke also referred to the “Ritual application of the Law, or The Works of The Law” i.e. book of Galatians addressed this issue regarding the errant teaching having to do with the Gentiles having to do the ‘Works of the Law in order to be saved”.  You are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, not because you follow the Torah, following the Torah (God’s Teaching and Instructions) comes after salvation and is an act of obedience, not an act of salvation.  This “Yoke” that was referred to was the endless list of man made rules and regulations regarding the keeping of the Torah, which became a burden or Yoke for the people.  Yeshua said His Torah/Yoke was easy and His Burden was light. Act 15:7  When there had been much discussion, Kefa rose up and said to them, "Brothers, you know that a good while ago God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the nations should hear the word of the Good News, and believe.

Act 15:8  God, who knows the heart, testified about them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just like he did to us.

Act 15:9  He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.

Act 15:10  Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the talmidim which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

Act 15:11  But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Yeshua, just as they are."

2.      The anointing is your saving strength.

Phi 4:13  I can do all things through Messiah/Christ which strengthens me.

3.      It’s the oil of joy-the joy of the Lord is your strength- Nehimiah 8:10, Isaiah 61:3

4.      We are to anoint the sick with Oil. James 5:14

5.      The anointing establishes you – 1 Corinthians 1:21

6.      God’s anointing comes upon you in times of need – Psalm 23:5, Psalm 45:7;Psalm 92:10

K.    When the Israelites (our forefathers) ate manna, they said it tasted like fresh oil – Numbers 11:8

The Word is God’s manna sent to us.  Psalm 119:103

Eating the Word without the anointing of the Ruach Ha Kodesh can make you very legalistic and judgmental.  We are to walk after the spirit, and not the flesh. Galatians 5

II.                WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF  HA MISHCHAH-THE ANOINTING?

A.     The anointing destroys the yoke of sin – Isaiah 10:27

B.     The anointing is both vertical, coming down from YHWH/God to you in personal relationship, and horizontal, going out to touch others.

1.      The anointing teaches you all things – 1 John 2:27

2.      We are to let the Ruach Ha Kodesh guide us into truth – John 14

C.     It equips you with the miracle power of YHWH/God to do the works of Yeshua/Jesus, and the greater works He said we would do – John 14:12

D.     It makes you a dynamic soul winner
